Video: CNN Attempt To Portray Patriots As Terrorists Backfires, Segment Fails To Air [03/31/10]
3 Video clips "A CNN Anderson Cooper segment which was set to demonize critics of big government and Obamacare as violent extremists backfired after radio host Alex Jones pointed out that corporate media outlets like CNN were responsible for killing over a million Iraqis as a consequence of their repeated lies about weapons of mass destruction. Jones was invited for an interview on Friday to appear later that evening on Anderson Cooper 360, but the segment never aired, presumably because CNN program chiefs were so embarrassed at Jones’ proficiency in exposing how corporate news networks owned by the military- industrial complex were a far deadlier threat than any of the menagerie of domestic “extremists” CNN has sought to demonize in recent weeks. Jones immediately recognized the tone of the hit piece when the interviewer began a barrage of questions attempting to discredit grassroots political movements by smearing them as dangerous radicals. Watch the interview below, which was filmed by one of Jones’ crew. CNN’s questions are not audible because they refused to allow Jones’ cameraman access to the feed ..... Asked if he was instigating some of the threats of violence seen in recent weeks in response to the passage of Obamacare, Jones stated, “Let’s be clear, I’m not like CNN and Fox promoting imaginary made up WMD’s in Iraq so that our military can go and kill a million innocent Iraqis, so no I don’t advocate for violence like the New York Times and CNN – I want to make that clear.” “I don’t advocate shock and awe like CNN did, OK? I don’t have the blood of a million dead people on my hands,” added Jones, “I didn’t kill a million Iraqis like those of you at CNN that pushed the lies – I’m not a murderer.” Jones also slammed CNN for hyping violence, knowing that talking about it 24/7 would only encourage mentally unstable people to commit more violence. He also dares to mention Anderson Cooper’s dirty little secret - the fact that he trained to be a CIA agent before pursuing a career in network news ......"

Vatican mounts legal defense to shield pope from US sex abuse lawsuit [03/31/10] "The Vatican is launching a legal defense that the church hopes will shield the pope from a lawsuit in Kentucky seeking to have him deposed over claims that the Holy See was negligent in failing to report abuse claims. In court documents obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press, Vatican lawyers map out their strategy to try to dismiss the lawsuit before Benedict XVI can be questioned or secret documents subpoenaed. The Vatican lawyers plan to argue the pope has immunity as head of state. They also say that a 1962 document is not a “smoking gun” proving a Vatican coverup. And the documents contend that American bishops who oversaw abusive priests were not employed by the Holy See. ..."

Diamond purchases fund death and disorder [03/31/10] "Every year, consumers the world over unwittingly spend billions of dollars on diamonds crafted in Israel, thereby helping to fund one of the world’s most protracted and contentious conflicts. Most people are unaware that Israel is one of the world’s leading producers of cut and polished diamonds. As diamonds are normally not hallmarked, consumers cannot distinguish an Israeli diamond from one crafted in India, Belgium, South Africa or elsewhere. The global diamond industry and aligned governments, including the EU, have hoodwinked consumers into believing the diamond trade has been cleansed of diamonds that fund human rights abuses, but the facts are startlingly different. ..."
MSM: " 'Only global fascist tyranny can save us now' says nice old man " [03/31/10] "Is anyone else as baffled as I am by the crazy, crazy world of James Lovelock? Here is the kindly, distinguished inventor of the Gaia hypothesis interviewed in the Guardian, when asked how humans will ever manage to tackle ‘climate change’. We need a more authoritative world. We’ve become a sort of cheeky, egalitarian world where everyone can have their say. It’s all very well, but there are certain circumstances – a war is a typical example – where you can’t do that. You’ve got to have a few people with authority who you trust who are running it. And they should be very accountable too, of course. But it can’t happen in a modern democracy. This is one of the problems. What’s the alternative to democracy? There isn’t one. But even the best democracies agree that when a major war approaches, democracy must be put on hold for the time being. I have a feeling that climate change may be an issue as severe as a war. It may be necessary to put democracy on hold for a while. “It may be necessary to put democracy on hold for a while.” Hmm. I’m sure he said it in a gentle, quavery, tentative voice, but even so, don’t phrases like that tend to make the blood run cold – especially when spoken by the man viewed by many of the world’s eco-loons as the ultimate environmental guru? ... in his most recent book The Vanishing Face of Gaia, he concludes that the damage caused by overpopulation, species decline and carbon emissions is already so great that modern civilisation is finished. Before the end of this century, he argues, rising sea levels and overheating will have rendered whole swathes of our planet uninhabitable and such few survivors as there are will have to make do as best they can. FBI gives a glimpse of its most secret layer [03/30/10] "It is where the government has hidden the most secret information: plans to relocate Congress if Washington were attacked, dossiers on double agents, case files about high-profile mob figures and their politician friends, and a disturbing number of reports about the possible smuggling of atomic bombs into the United States. It is also where the bureau stowed documents considered more embarrassing than classified, including its history of illegal spying on domestic political organizations and surveillance of nascent gay rights groups. It is the FBI’s “special file room,’’ where for decades sensitive material has been stored separately from the bureau’s central filing system to restrict access severely and, in more sinister instances, some experts assert, prevent the Congress and the public from getting their hands on it. Established in 1948 under the reign of notoriously secretive FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, it remains in use today at FBI headquarters in Washington to safeguard what the bureau considers its most highly sensitive information. ..."

KBR Bills $5 Million For Mechanics Who Work 43 Minutes a Month [03/30/10] "It was just a single contract for a single job on a single base in Iraq. The Department of Defense agreed to pay the megacontractor KBR $5 million a year to repair tactical vehicles, from Humvees to big rigs, at Joint Base Balad, a large airfield and supply center north of Baghdad. Yet according to a new Pentagon report [PDF], what the military got was as many as 144 civilian mechanics, each doing as little as 43 minutes of work a month, with virtually no oversight. The report, issued March 3 by the DOD’s inspector general, found that between late 2008 and mid-2009, KBR performed less than 7 percent of the work it was expected to do, but still got paid in full. The $4.6 million blown on this particular contract is a relatively small loss considering that in 2009 alone, the government had a blanket deal worth $5 billion with KBR (formerly known as the Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg Brown & Root). Just days before the Pentagon released the Balad report, KBR announced it had won a new $2.3 billion-plus, five-year Iraq contract. But the inspector general’s modest investigation offers new insight into just how little KBR delivers and how toothless the Pentagon is to prevent contractor waste. ..."

Removing Viruses from a PC That Won’t Boot [03/30/10] "One of the more common questions I hear from readers with computer virus infections is, “How do I get rid of a virus if I can’t even boot up into Windows to run an anti-virus scan?” Fortunately, there are a number of free, relatively easy-to-use tools that can help on this front. The tools in this review are known as a “rescue CDs.” These are all free, Linux-based operating systems that one can download and burn to a CD-Rom. Once you’ve configured your PC to boot from the CD you’ve just burned, you can use the CD to scan your hard drive, and — depending on the type of rescue CD you choose — even copy files to a removable drive. ..."
Commentary: Another Arab Summit: Another Exercise in Political Impotence and Ineptitude [03/29/10] "Once again, hundreds of millions of Arabs and Muslims around the world are affronted with another Arab summit conference, which is taking place in Serte in Libya. There, flamboyant dictators, dynastic despots and presidents-for-life have converged on the North African Arab nation to perform an annual futile ritual known as the Arab summit conference. Over the years, the annual ritual effectively became a buzzword for futility, incompetence and idiotic wrangling among petty dictators and tribesmen-like heads of state. Eventually, the chronic, striking inability of these summiteers to get anything worthwhile done earned them special notoriety for political inertness, ineptness and impotence. To cover up their annual season of shame, these leaders would issue a communiqué that is as mendacious as a whore’s mouth. ..."
Deep Background - Assassinating Americans [03/29/10] "Killing dissident citizens without due process is not a unique practice. Libyans, Iranians, and Soviets all did it in the 1980s and 1990s. But it is unusual in a liberal democracy where there are restraints on depriving a citizen of his life. The odd thing is that no one who matters seems too disturbed. No congressional committee protested, the New York Times only ran a short discussion thread on its online opinion page, and the Washington Post relegated the story to page 3 without any follow-up. ..."

The Collapse of Journalism/The Journalism of Collapse: New Storytelling and a New Story By Robert Jensen[03/28/10] "There is considerable attention paid in the United States to the collapse of journalism — both in terms of the demise of the business model for corporate commercial news media, and the evermore superficial, shallow, and senseless content that is inadequate for citizens concerned with self-governance. This collapse is part of larger crises in the political and economic spheres, crises rooted in the incompatibility of democracy and capitalism. New journalistic vehicles for storytelling are desperately needed. There has been far less discussion of the need for a journalism of collapse — the challenge to tell the story of a world facing multiple crises in the realms of social justice and sustainability. This collapse of the basic political and economic systems of the modern world, with dramatic consequences on the human and ecological fronts, demands not only new storytelling vehicles but a new story. In this essay I want to review the failure of existing systems and suggest ideas for how to think about something radically different, through the lens of journalists’ work. The phrase “how to think about” should not be interpreted to mean “provide a well-developed plan for”; I don’t have magical answers to these difficult questions, and neither does anyone else. The first task is to face the fact that every problem we encounter does not necessarily have a solution that we can identify, or even imagine, in the moment; that identifying how existing systems have failed does not guarantee we have the capacity to devise new systems that will succeed. ..."

His father was born in 1910 in Warsaw, Poland, with the name Benzion Mileikowsky. Like many Zionist immigrants from Poland and Russia, the Mileikowsky family changed the name when they came to Palestine in the 1920s. Shimon Peres is the same. That must mean that there are a couple of signatures on the Mossad 911 sign off sheet. The first would be the signature of Bibi Netanyahu. It would be near the end of Netanyahu's first stent as Prime minister in 2001 that he would dispatch his Mossad death squad to America to observe, if not assist, those who would allegedly hijack our planes and kill our citizens on 9/11. An Act of Treason by Members of the United States Congress [03/28/10]
Video clip [2:19] "It must have been realised that the letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, signed by nearly 300 members of the U.S. Congress, affirming their commitment to Israel, would be widely publicised and fall into the hands of that illegal Apartheid State, so the writing and signing of that letter should be considered an act of treason. The letter has totally undermined the power of the President of the United States by virtually telling Israel: “It does not matter what you do to the Palestinians, how many illegal structures you build on the territory you stole from them; how you behave towards the Lebanese, or what you have in mind for Iran, we, the signatories on this letter are with you, all the way.” ..."
Hitchens: Pope Benedict wants ‘wiggle room’ for ‘rape and torture of children’ [03/28/10] "The Catholic Church is in serious trouble and may have nowhere to run, depending on who you ask. "I warned them about all of this," declared author Christopher Hitchens, appearing on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday night. "Nothing
good can come of a church that has as its' slogan, 'Leave no child's behind.' And then they went and chose as pope the man who was personally responsible, in his dioceses, and institutionally responsible for the cover-up. So now, there's no escape." The child rape scandals that have savaged Catholic ranks for years starting in the United States, then flaring up in Ireland, Germany, Italy and other locations around the world, have finally come to implicate Pope Benedict XVI, according to recent reports. At time of this writing, the most recent scandal flare-up involved a school for the deaf in Wisconsin, where up to 200 boys were molested by a man whom Hitchens said "was allowed to walk free and was buried with full honors as a priest." Even with his role in covering-up child molestations at his former dioceses in Munich, Pope Benedict offered an apology for the sexual abuse so rampant in the church, but did not call for any law enforcement action. ... Hitchens called the pope's apology a request for "wiggle room" on the "rape and torture of children." "It's funny because in this society... Even in prisons, there is a hierarchy of crimes," said Maher. "The child molesters are the ones who even hardened criminals shun, or actually kill." "This is the one crime no one can think about without vomiting, that the once great, moral church wants wiggle room for," Hitchens summarized. "This present pope is the head of a state, a political state, as well as the church. So, it's not just that the spiritual leader of a big cult is a proven protector of child molesters, but the head of a government is, with- has an embassy in Washington. Well, can he land here from now on? Shouldn't Congress become seized with the matter? Shouldn't the European Union be asking, 'Can this guy travel freely?' Isn't he wanted for the foulest crime of all? These are questions that, I promise you, are going to continue being asked.""

Gordon Duff: Sabrosky Interview Ties Israel To 9/11 [03/26/10] "Meet Dr. Alan Sabrosky, a brave man, a USMC Vietnam vet, an American of Jewish ancestry and someone devoted to the security of the United States at any cost. Ask any Jew what it takes to stand up against the most powerful and ruthless group in the world, the Israeli lobby inside the United States. Sabrosky has been calling for a new 9/11 investigation for some time. What makes him unique is that we have a Jew who can hardly be called “self-hating” or “anti-Semitic” or against Israel. He is consistent in everything he says. His point is that you are an American or you are an Israeli but you can’t be both, especially now with Zionism turning Israeli foreign policy into a “runaway train.” 9/11, as Sabrosky sees it was the watershed in a relationship between America and Israel that has gone from bad to unsurviveable, especially for America. He contents that AIPAC exercises near total control over the electoral process in America through the ability to outspend any other group and destroy anyone who stands against them. Sabrosky is one of the few Americans who sees the nuclear threat of Israel as it is, blackmailing the United States, not only in how it could be used to draw America into an unwanted war, but how it could actually be used at some point to attack the United States itself. Only recently, Israel put Western Europe on notice that it would be attacked if its actions threatened Israel, attacked by nuclear weaons from Israel without warning. Martin van Creveld’s threat combined with Sabrosky’s analysis of Israeli intentions and culpability for 9/11 brings to mind something Sabrosky had once written. Sabrosky makes a case, not just for a coverup of 9/11 but goes much further. He points out as do so many that the physics of the attack are unworkable. He, however, is one of the few to point to a conclusion many find obvious but few have the nerve to admit, that it would have been impossible to stage 9/11 without the full resources of both the CIA and Mossad and that 9/11 served the interests of both agencies quite well. There was nothing they could have wished for more. ..."

Commentary: Truth Has Fallen And Taken Liberty With It [03/26/10] "The American corporate media does not serve the truth. It serves the government and the interest groups that empower the government. America's fate was sealed when the public and the anti-war movement bought the government's 9/11 conspiracy theory. The government's account of 9/11 is contradicted by much evidence. Nevertheless, this defining event of our time, which has launched the US on interminable wars of aggression and a domestic police state, is a taboo topic for investigation in the media. It is pointless to complain of war and a police state when one accepts the premise upon which they are based. The militarism of the U.S. and Israeli states, and Wall Street and corporate greed, will now run their course. As the pen is censored and its might extinguished, I am signing off. ..."

Creamer’s attendance was leaked by a fellow partygoer who blogged: “I just got back from the post-signing ceremony celebration at the Interior Department. Amish, Muslims to be excused from Obamacare mandate [03/26/10] "The Senate health care bill just signed contains some exemptions to the "pay-or-play" mandate requiring purchase of Obamacare-approved health insurance or payment of a penalty fine. As Fox News has pointed out, for instance, the Amish are excused from the mandate: So while most Americans would be required to sign up with insurance companies or government insurance plans, the church would serve as something of an informal insurance plan for the Amish. Law experts say that kind of exemption withstands scrutiny. "Here the statute is going to say that people who are conscientiously opposed to paying for health insurance don't have to do it where the conscientious objection arises from religion," said Mark Tushnet a Harvard law professor. "And that's perfectly constitutional." Apparently, this exemption will apply similarly to believers in Islam, which considers health insurance - and, for that matter, any form of risk insurance - to be haraam (forbidden). ..."

Commentary: The Southern Poverty Law Center...Another Zionist Hate Organization In Disguise? [03/26/10] "I bet you thought the Southern Poverty Law Center had something to do with the civil rights of poor African Americans didn't you? At some point I did too. That's why I thought it was strange when I heard that the SPLC had branded We Are Change as a hate group. You see that's apparently what the Southern Poverty Law Center does. It solicits vast amounts of money each year to support its wealthy board of directors and brands Americans as hate groups. Not a bad gig if you are a greedy, unscrupulous and hypocritical shit. But who has become the serious harbingers of hate in this country? It doesn't take long to figure out that this organization is just one more cog in what has been described as the Zionist Power Configuration. You see the SPLC like many Jewish extremist hate organizations never judges a man by the color of his skin or ethnicity unless he happens to be a Palestinian or stands in the way of their nefarious Zionist self serving objectives. But what are SPLC's directors Morris Dees and Joseph Levin really worried about here. We Are Change is simply an organization that wants a real investigation into 911. No sign of hate that I could see on their website. And why did former Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff suggest that "the questioning of 911 truth was akin to holocaust denial". Or how about Obama advisor Cass Sunstein? The Harvard professor who produced a paper that would call for the "cognitive infiltration" of 911 conspiracy groups. Could these guys have figured out like many of the rest of us that all roads to 911 truth lead to Tel Aviv. Is there a conspiracy of treason among the supporters of Apartheid Israel in this country? It is beginning to look like it. ..."
Related: Anti-Hate Group Finds Yet Another Group It Hates "The Southern Poverty Law Center (or as I like to call it: ADL South), has published a post on yet another group of people it hates (because it doesn’t fit into the SPLC’s socialist view of the world): FEMA conspiracy theorists. Of course, SPLC’s “expert” sources for the condemnation of the theorists are the highly-esteemed scholarly journals Popular Mechanics and Newsweek, CNN’s “American Morning” show, and (drum roll, please) the latest Establishment pseudo-Libertarian shill Glenn Beck. Well, if those New World Order/One World Government media puppets say that there is no truth to the government building FEMA detention camps for political prisoners, that cinches it for me. That’ll show those conspiracy nuts. Or does it? It seems that a rogue Establishment public broadcast station, KBDI Colorado Public Television, had the temerity to air a documentary called Camp FEMA: American Lockdown three times. The film explores the possibility that the government is building FEMA detention camps for political prisoners. This has ruffled the fascist feathers of the SPLC. The SPLC post also disparages the late Libertarian Aaron Russo’s documentary on the secret history of the Fed that KBDI aired alongside the FEMA documentary. The SPLC proclaims that Russo’s documentary was “debunked” by the “Federal” Reserve Banksters’ own personal mouthpiece, The New York Times. (That’ll show those conspiracy nuts again.) And, of course, where would any post on “hate” groups be without it throwing in the anti-hate warning du jour that some groups are anti-Jewish. Yep, it’s in this SPLC post also. Phew! Now we can all sleep better. ..."
CNN: Israel and the lobby against the US: "A Perfect Storm in Washington" [03/25/10]

3 Video clips For many decades, Israel's brutality toward its neighbors and its responsibility for the deaths of American soldiers have been absent from most mainstream media. CNN has just broken the mold – "A perfect storm is brewing in Washington. Gen. Petraeus has given many mainstream commentators cover with his comments about Israel’s actions endangering US lives around the world. It is no longer only our good friends at Mondoweiss.net: everyone from Joe Klein (Time), Roger Cohen (New York Times), Glenn Greenwald (Salon), Andrew Bacevich (Salon), Col. Pat Lang, John Mearsheimer (LRB), Jim Lobe (IPS), Stephen Walt (CNN), to Robert Dreyfuss (The Nation) is talking about it. Juan Cole has also abandoned his overly cautious approach take on the Israel lobby’s chief media doberman: Cpl. Jeffrey Goldberg. Meanwhile, the left is once again proving its irrelevance. Instead of covering the issue seriously Democracy Now! for example focused on the obligatory diplomatic niceties to dismiss the whole issue. (You can picture DN covering Caesar’s assassination and dimissing all of Mark Antony’s concerns because he called Brutus and the conspirators ‘honourable men’). But here is the true indicator of the changing winds in Washington: even CNN is talking about it! (To be fair to Rick Sanchez, he did some courageous reporting even during the Gaza conflict, giving platform to our friend Diana Buttu to debunk Zionist hasbara). ..."

Four Michigan Residents Sue to Get out of Federalized Health Care [03/25/10] "he Thomas More Law Center has joined the slew of legal action sparked by the passage of President Barack Obama's health care legislation. The Ann Arbor-based conservative law firm filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday challenging the constitutionality of federalized health care in the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The president signed the 10-year, $938-billion piece of legislation into law on Tuesday. "This case isn't so much about health care, it is about what our Constitution allows and doesn't allow," said Robert Muise, the senior trial counsel at the Thomas More Law Center. "If Congress is allowed to have this power, there is virtually no limit to what law they can pass. They could force a person to engage in a commercial transaction." The lawsuit states, "There is no enumerated power in the Constitution that permits the federal government to mandate that every American citizen purchase or obtain health care coverage or face a penalty." The lawsuit was filed on behalf of four Michigan residents who do not have private health care insurance and object to being forced to purchase it. "Let's face it: If Congress has the power to force individuals to purchase health insurance coverage or pay a federal penalty merely because they live in America, then it has the unconstrained power to mandate that every American family buy a General Motors vehicle to help the economy or pay a federal penalty," said Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel of the Thomas More Law Center, in a press release. ..."

‘Death Obsessed’ Texas Set to Execute Another Innocent Man Wednesday [03/24/10] "The bloody-minded, death-obsessed state of Texas, which has already demonstrably executed at least one innocent man, Cameron Todd Willingham (who was falsely accused and ultimately killed by the state for the alleged arson “murder” of his two little children when in fact they’d died because of a fire caused by an electrical fault), may be about to execute yet another innocent man. This time it’s Hank Skinner, 47, a man who has spent 16 years on the state’s busy death row protesting his innocence in the 1993 New Year’s Eve murder of his girlfriend, Twila Busby, and her two sons, aged 20 and 22. The thing about Skinner’s case is it would be relatively easy to prove whether or not he was really the killer of the three. There are two bloody knives that have never been tested for Skinner’s DNA – or for the DNA of Twila’s uncle, the man who had reportedly made several unwanted sexual advances on her earlier that evening, leading her to leave a party early, and who Skinner claims is the real killer. Nor was semen that was found on Twila Busby, who was raped, or skin found under her fingernails, ever DNA tested to see who they belonged to. There were, to be sure, plenty of circumstantial reasons at the time to suspect Skinner. It is undisputed that he had been drunk and passed out on the couch in Busby’s house shortly before the murders, which occurred in the same room he was in. The drunken Skinner also staggered from the home in Pampa, Texas, his hands bloodied, following the killings. But Skinner maintains that he had cut his hand, falling off the couch, and that the blood was his own. He says he had woken up to find Busby and her sons already dead. ..."

Commentary: The Moral Case Against Health Care Reform [03/24/10] "....the only alternative to rationing through price is rationing through the government, and this is immoral because the decision of what constitutes a "need" is made by a third party with no personal connection to the individual or his circumstances. Ultimately, these decisions are made by those with the most political influence -- a situation that inevitably breeds corruption. These governing bodies do not respect the primacy of the individual, but rather view the individual as a means to society's ends. Bureaucrats don't make decisions about health care according to an individual's "need" or preference, but rather, they ration resources based on a social-driven calculus. As evidence of this, the health care bill under consideration has a Medicare board of unelected officials to determine the program's treatment protocols as a method of limiting costs. ..."

Ron Paul – IRS Will Steal More Money To Fund Health Care [03/23/10]
Video clip [5:51] "Texas Congressman Ron Paul warns that last night’s passage of the health care reform bill will prompt the government to hire thousands of new IRS agents who will be used to steal money from taxpaying Americans to fund the new program. Paul also told Fox News that the passage of Obamacare will only be repealed once the United States enters bankruptcy as a result of its exploding national deficit and runaway spending. “Any time a government tries to give you a service or something of substance, they have to steal it from somebody else, so the whole process is immoral because it’s based on government theft, that’s why they’re hiring 16,000 more new IRS agents, because they have to steal more money,” stated the Congressman, referring to an analysis by the Joint Economic Committee and the House Ways & Means Committee that found “Up to 16,500 new IRS personnel will be needed to collect, examine and audit new tax information mandated on families and small businesses,” under the health care bill. Paul said that the passage of Obamacare will precipitate a deepening of the economic crisis that will be “defined by the destruction of the dollar,” meaning government won’t be able to pay for anything. “You cannot spend this kind of money, borrow this money and create new credit to finance this debt….medical care will get worse and this country will go into bankruptcy,” added Paul. “This idea of an executive order amending the bill just is such an outrage,” said the Congressman, slamming Obama’s intention to bar federal funding for abortion after the vote as both misplaced and completely unconstitutional. “To think that we’ve gotten to a point where we allow our presidents just to write an executive order as the law of he land, there’s nothing conceivable about that being Constitutional,” said Paul. Throughout his campaign, Obama promised not to use executive powers and signing statements to change laws, a principle he has completely abandoned in pursuit of his big government agenda. Congressman Paul warned that apparent efforts to prevent health care money being used to fund abortions were utterly ineffectual, saying that hospitals and clinics are just going to shift money around to fudge evidence of where the funds are being used. On the wider argument behind government providing health care, Paul stated, “Central economic planning, if anything the 20th century proves, central economic planning fails, every country in the world today is on the verge of bankruptcy….and we’re marching on to a worldwide economic catastrophe if we’re not careful.” ..."

US House passes healthcare overhaul [03/22/10] "The US House of Representatives has narrowly approved President Barack Obama's top domestic priority, the healthcare reform bill. The bill cleared the House on a 219-212 vote Sunday night. Republicans were unanimous in opposition, joined by 34 dissident Democrats. The vote sends the bill, already approved by the Senate, to Obama to sign into law. The legislation will extend health coverage to 32 millions of uninsured Americans, bringing to 95 percent the proportion of under-65 US citizens with private insurance. Republicans say the $940 billion bill was a heavy-handed intrusion in the healthcare sector that will drive up costs, increase the budget deficit and reduce patients' choices. The healthcare overhaul would usher in the biggest changes in the $2.5 trillion US healthcare system since the 1965 creation of the government-run Medicare health program for the elderly and disabled. It would require most Americans to have health coverage, gives subsidies to help lower-income workers pay for coverage and creates state-based exchanges where the uninsured can compare and shop for plans. Major provisions such as the exchanges and subsidies would not kick in until 2014, but many of the insurance reforms like barring companies from dropping coverage for the sick will begin in the first year. ..." This will make us one of the highest-taxed regions in the world, and that's going to have an impact on the appetite for people to invest in medical innovation," said Bill Hawkins, chief executive of Medtronic Inc., which makes medical devices. He said his company could cut at least 1,000 jobs to absorb a new 2.9% excise tax on medical-device makers ..... Under the legislation, consumers will see changes within months. Insurers won't be able to place lifetime limits on coverage. Children will be able to stay on their parents' insurance policies until their 26th birthday. The changes could be bumpy, because insurers warn they won't be able to make them so quickly. .... The bulk of the legislation wouldn't take effect until 2014. Once the tax credits and Medicaid expansion are in place, most Americans will be required to carry health insurance or pay a fee, topping out at either $695 a year or 2.5% of income.
Silver Linings: How ObamaCare Can Be Attacked [03/22/10] "The health care bill's taxes will go into effect promptly, but its substantive provisions are, for the most part, deferred for four years. This means that we have plenty of time to repeal the legislation. Sure, it will take a new Congress and new President. But repealing this disaster of a bill will by a rallying cry for the American people for years to come. Moreover, even if the Republicans only take over the House in November, and not the Senate, won't it be possible to throw roadblocks in the way of the bill's implementation? Won't budget appropriations be necessary to sustain the various federal tentacles the bill seeks to establish? What will happen if the House simply refuses to fund them? ..."

British inquiry into Iraq war turns toward Bush, officials: report [03/22/10] "Senior Bush administration officials, including former President George W. Bush himself, have been asked to give testimony before a British committee investigating the basis for the invasion of Iraq, according to a published report. Other officials contacted by the panel include former Vice President Dick Cheney, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former Bush adviser Stephen Hadley, among others. "Members of Sir John Chilcot's panel are believed to be willing to travel to the US to take evidence – almost certainly in private – on the administration's policies between the 2003 invasion of Iraq and 2009," The Telegraph reported on Sunday. The paper's lead is based on statements made by unnamed sources in Washington, D.C., and the story notes that even while the Chilcot has succeeded in obtaining testimony from high-ranking British officials, it does not have subpoena power in the U.K. or U.S. The panel has so far managed to put former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and current Prime Minister Gordon Brown on the hot seat for hours at a time, forcing both men to offer repeated justification for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. However, while the Telegraph claimed approximately 10 Bush officials had responded positively to the panel, Washington Post columnist Al Kamen noted on Friday that most were "decidedly cool" to the idea. ..."
AIPAC policy meeting begins amid US-Israeli tensions [03/22/10] "The top pro-Israeli lobby in the US, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, commonly known as AIPAC, has opened its annual three-day conference in Washington DC. The event is held at a time when a row over Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem (al-Quds) has left scars in US-Israeli relations. The annual conference attracts thousands of lobbyists and protesters who oppose Israeli policies in the Palestinian territories. US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is scheduled to be a plenary speaker on the closing day of AIPAC's March 21-23 conference. Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama is scheduled to be in Indonesia and will not address the event. Other speakers at the conference, with more than 7,000 attendees, include Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Kadima Party leader Tzipi Livni. The conference is expected to focus on stressing the close US-Israel relations and urging the Obama administration to move past recent tensions with Israel over its plans to build another 1,600 settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. Further plans to lobby for enhanced sanctions against Iran over its nuclear enrichment program are also on the agenda of the conference. ..."

Racial discrimination is still a chronic problem of the United States. The living conditions of women and children in the United States are deteriorating and their rights are not properly guaranteed. The United States with its strong military power has pursued hegemony in the world, trampling upon the sovereignty of other countries and trespassing their human rights. Former Thai Prime Minister on the run acquires Montenegro nationality [03/21/10] "Recently gathered in the Thai capital, several tens of thousand "red shirts" (UDD/DAAD),
partisans of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, collected 300 litres of blood, which they spilled at the front gate of current Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’ residence. Thakson Shinawatra became a very rich telecommunications tycoon, building a business empire as leading South East Asian manager in the cell phone, satellite television and low-cost air travel sectors. During his five-year tenure, this business man quadrupled his personal fortune while evading taxes. He cracked down on the muslim minority, having at least 2000 people killed. He declared a ruthless war on drugs, lasting three months, that claimed more than 2500 lives and facilitated the consolidation of the networks. Suspected of planning to instate a republic, he was toppled in 2006 by the army during his trip to New York to attend the U.N. General Assembly. He was sentenced in absentia to a 2-year prison term for embezzlement of public funds. Last week, the Supreme Court confirmed the decision to confiscate 1,4 billion dollars out of the frozen 2,2 billion belonging to the Shinawatra family estate. After living in Cambodia (where he was economic adviser to the Government) and in the United Kingdom (where he bought the Manchester City Football Club), Thaksin Shinawatra settled down in the United Arab Emirates. Lately, he was haranguing his supporters to demand the annulment of the Court decision, the resignation of the government and the holding of general elections. However, having used Dubai to destabilize Thailand, he was expelled from the Emirates for contravening his status of political refugee. He has recently arrived in Montenegro, where he was granted citizenship by Prime Minister Milo Đukanović. While he was at it, Shinawatra invested in the hotel industry in Podgorica. Obamacare: Robert Gibbs publicly admits a 4-year delay in implementing the adult preexisting condition rule [03/21/10] "WH Press Secretary Robert Gibbs acknowledged today during his press briefing that the rule prohibiting insurance companies from excluding adults for preexisting conditions will not take effect for another four years. This is the first time I have heard this publicly stated by an official of the administration. Today. Three days before the purported vote. Now, the question is, will our media report this to the American people before this debacle of a vote? Somehow, I don't think most people will take this little piece of shrouded information lightly. With all the celebration going on about how 'historic' this bill is, the people are finding out that they will not see any benefits for 4 more years for one of the mainstays in how this monstrously flawed Senate health care bill was sold to us. So, for 4 more years, the lives of adults with preexisting conditions will be destroyed by the backroom deals made between the president and Big Health. Are they hoping for the ink to dry on this bill before the people find out? ..."

Period." - Dr. Alan Sabrosky, March 14, 2010 ..." Zionism and Nazism: Is there a difference that makes a difference? "What, then, are the differences and similarities between Zionism and Nazism? If we go back to the definition of Nazism we see four characteristics mentioned. One of them was a reference to a transient political ideology, communism, while the other three are historical constants. Throwing out “anti-communism” we are left with the essential elements. When we look at Zionism in terms of what it actually is rather than some devious, self-serving Zionist definition we find what? - “Nationalism, traditionalism and the importance of the ethnostate.” We also find the essential elements of fascism in general, the arrogance of group ego and the assertion of an a priori privilege that trumps any such fripperies as civil rights, human rights, international law or even common human decency. Coercion and force majeure are the means and virtual enslavement or extermination of the “others” (the goyim) are the ends. Characteristically, we also find the common element of a sense of infinite entitlement based on perceived prior victimhood. As for any arguments based on the obvious or perceived differences between Zionism and Nazism, we can easily dismiss them as superficialities rather than differences that make a difference. Whether it's a brown rat or a grey rat, it's the same animal. Substantively, they are identical manifestations of the same basic pathology and they are equally dangerous to the well being of humanity. We can comfort ourselves with the knowledge that the bullies never win in the end, because underneath the bluster they are abject cowards and cowardice can’t sustain itself in the long term. But that doesn’t mean we can just sit back and wait for them to meet their inevitable fate – as we have seen, they are capable of doing immense harm in the meantime. All of the great wisdom traditions are in agreement that we are human beings first and anything else is at best a secondary characteristic. As long as there remains any confusion about this various forms of fascism will arise and bedevil us. As long as we identify ourselves primarily in some tribal fashion, whether it's based on nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender or any parochial and exclusionary manner, then confusion and conflict will reign supreme. We shall indeed overcome, if we last that long, but only when it is universally understood that We refers to all of us. In the meantime, silence is complicity. ..."

But House Democrats, when they vote for the Senate bill using the "Deem & Pass" dodge, also want to simultaneously pass a package of amendments to the law. Except HCR will not, at that point, be law. Winds of War Blow Across Israel [03/21/10] "Is there a new intifada in the works? This is what Israelis are asking one another following a difficult week full of unrest, tension, and violence. For five days, Palestinians in East Jerusalem and the West Bank rioted in a series of outbursts that peaked on their declared “Day of Rage” on Tuesday. Border Guard officers were attacked by dozens of masked rioters hurling stones and setting fire to tires. The rioters were dispersed with stun guns. Both rioters and police suffered injuries and there were multiple arrests. The timing of the unrest isn’t surprising. Israel has given the extremists plenty of ammunition to stir up the population, and the recent sharp exchanges between Washington and Jerusalem have likely given them encouragement. First, there was the declaration of West Bank-located Rachel’s Tomb and Tomb of the Patriarchs as historic sites by the government of Israel, a declaration which gave the government resources to renovate them. Then came the ill-timed announcement of construction of additional housing in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo during the visit of U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden, during which he condemned the plan, sparking a war of words between Jerusalem and Washington. Strike three: the dedication of a new synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem — this coming on the heels of the naming of West Bank holy places as Israeli national heritage sites. ..."
Probable Constitutional Challenges to ObamaCare [03/21/10] "If the president signs H.R. 3590 (whether or not the bill is reconciled, “slaughter ruled,” and/or deemed in its passage), the legislation will be challenged on constitutional grounds. Let’s look at a few of the ways that federal control of health care, and H.R. 3590 in particular, is unconstitutional. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer was asked where in the Constitution Congress was granted the power to mandate that a person must buy a health insurance policy. His answer: Well, in promoting the general welfare the Constitution obviously gives broad authority to Congress to effect that end. The end that we’re trying to effect is to make health care affordable, so I think clearly this is within our constitutional responsibility. The “general welfare” clause Hoyer was referring to is in the first line of Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution. This section specifically enumerates the powers of Congress. (The list is very short. Congress has 17 listed, or “enumerated,” powers. Health care isn’t one of them.) ..."

Whiff of Eugenics: Ginsburg Tells NYT Roe About 'Populations That We Don't Want .... Who is this "we" Ginsburg refers to? Alleged reporter Bazelon did not follow up on this astounding admission. Here, in full context of the Q&A discussion about women's reproductive rights, is Justice Ginsburg's statement: ...JUSTICE GINSBURG: Yes, the ruling about that surprised me. [Harris v. McRae — in 1980 the court upheld the Hyde Amendment, which forbids the use of Medicaid for abortions.] Frankly I had thought that at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don’t want to have too many of. So that Roe was going to be then set up for Medicaid funding for abortion. Which some people felt would risk coercing women into having abortions when they didn’t really want them. But when the court decided McRae, the case came out the other way. And then I realized that my perception of it had been altogether wrong....."

Adopted as official policy in November 1975 by President Gerald Ford, NSSM 200 outlined a covert plan to reduce population growth in those countries through birth control, and also, implicitly, war and famine. ‘Deem and Pass’ Unlikely to Be Reversed in Courts, Experts Say [03/20/10] ".... There's been a lot of buzz this week about the questionable constitutionality of a tactic House Democrats may use to pass the controversial Senate health care bill. By using the so-called deem and pass maneuver, they wouldn't have to vote explicitly for the bill. Instead, they would vote on fixes to the bill -- or maybe on rules for debating the fixes to the bill -- and agree that those votes would count as votes on the bill itself. Congress would then send the health care bill -- explicitly passed by the Senate and "deemed" to have been passed by the House -- to the White House for President Obama's signature. A written measure proposing to deem the health care bill passed might emerge on Saturday, according to Vincent Morris, spokesman for Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., who chairs the House Rules Committee. ..."

Judicial Watch: Slaughter Rule Unconstitutional [03/19/10] "Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton issued the following statement today in response to plans by the House of Representatives to use the so-called Slaughter Rule to “deem” the Senate health care bill passed without an actual up-or-down vote: A constitutional crisis is upon us. The Democratic leadership’s plan to use the “Slaughter Rule” to pass the Senate health care bill without an explicit “yea or nay” vote by the House is an absolute violation of the U.S. Constitution (Article 1, Section 7). Indeed, the Supreme Court has held that “(1) a bill containing its exact text was approved by a majority of the Members of the House of Representatives; (2) the Senate approved precisely the same text; and (3) that text was signed into law by the President. The Constitution explicitly requires that each of those three steps be taken before a bill may ‘become a law.’” Clinton v. City of New York, 524 U.S. 417, 448 (1998) Simply put, the House can’t pretend to vote on a bill and expect that the result will pass constitutional muster. No House member can keep true to his oath of office to “support and defend the Constitution” and approve the use of the Slaughter Rule to avoid a direct vote on the Senate health care bill. And the U.S. Constitution would also seem to require that President Obama veto any resulting “bill” sent to him for signature, as the document that results from any House action under the Slaughter Rule is a constitutional nullity. But concerned Americans should not assume that the courts will uphold the Constitution and throw out any government health care takeover because of the Slaughter Rule. The best defense against the Slaughter Rule’s usurpation of the Constitution is to stop it legislatively this weekend. ..."

Louis Brandeis’ Partial Justice: How the famous jurist shaped—and misshaped—American law [03/20/10] "In June 1928, the Harvard law professor and future Supreme Court justice Felix Frankfurter received a letter from his patron and ally, Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis. In it, Brandeis gave the perfect quick description of the constitutional philosophy he had been honing during the previous five decades, first as one of America’s leading lawyers and then on the nation’s highest court, where he sat from 1916 until 1939. “In favor of property,” Brandeis wrote, “the Constitution is liberally constructed—in favor of liberty, strictly.” In other words, when it came to laws restricting property rights and economic freedom, the courts should defer to the judgment of lawmakers and vote to uphold the vast majority of regulations, a practice known then and now as judicial restraint. But when it came to laws restricting “liberty,” by which Brandeis meant free speech, the right to privacy, and other civil liberties, the courts should carefully scrutinize each law and, if they detected the slightest whiff of unconstitutionality, strike it down without hesitation. That double standard, which asks the courts to favor some rights over others, has dominated the American legal system since the late 1930s, essentially leaving economic liberty at the mercy of state and federal lawmakers while “fundamental” rights receive aggressive judicial protection. As Melvin Urofsky, a historian at Virginia Commonwealth University, helps explain in his exhaustive and sympathetic new biography, Louis D. Brandeis: A Life, no one did more to bring about this uneven state of affairs than Brandeis himself. ...“The makers of our Constitution,” he wrote, “conferred, as against the government, the right to be let alone—the most comprehensive of rights and the right most valued by civilized men. To protect that right, every unjustifiable intrusion by the Government upon the privacy of the individual, whatever the means employed, must be deemed a violation of the Fourth Amendment.” It hardly mattered “that the intrusion was in aid of law enforcement.” As Brandeis explained, “The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachments by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding.” By the late 1960s, the Court finally came around to this position. In the 2001 case Kyllo v. United States, Justice Antonin Scalia relied on Brandeis’ reasoning to strike down the government’s warrantless use of thermal imaging to search for signs of marijuana cultivation in the defendant’s home. Urofsky suggests that Brandeis’ sweepingly libertarian dissent “should be read every day by government officials, including presidents,” and it’s hard to disagree. Yet for all the eloquence of his Olmstead opinion, when it came to the “insidious encroachments” of the regulatory state Brandeis was all too happy to defer to “men of zeal.”"

The bombing will include more than the nuclear facilities and will continue until the Iranians agree to regime change and the installation of a puppet government. The corrupt American media will present the new puppet as “freedom and democracy.” ..."

Commentary: Israel: The "Special Relationship" is dead [03/19/10] "Israel didn't. When Vice President Joe Biden was embarrassed by an Israeli announcement that the Netanyahu government was building 1,600 new homes in East Jerusalem, the administration reacted. But no one was more outraged than Biden who, according to the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth, engaged in a private, and angry, exchange with the Israeli Prime Minister: "This is starting to get dangerous for us," Biden reportedly told Netanyahu. "What you're doing here undermines the security of our troops who are fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. That endangers us and it endangers regional peace." Yedioth Ahronoth went on to report: "The vice president told his Israeli hosts that since many people in the Muslim world perceived a connection between Israel's actions and US policy, any decision about construction that undermines Palestinian rights in East Jerusalem could have an impact on the personal safety of American troops fighting against Islamic terrorism." The message couldn't be plainer: Israel's intransigence could cost American lives. ..."
Britain: Strange Triple Suicide [03/19/10] "The mystery of three refugees who jumped to their deaths from a Glasgow tower block took a dramatic turn yesterday when it emerged that one of them had claimed to be a member of the Russian security services and went on to allege that he had uncovered a plot by the Canadian Government to assassinate the Queen. Serge Serykh, 43, who, along with his wife and stepson, threw himself off a Glasgow tower block, was convinced that if he was not given asylum in Britain his life would be at risk. It is clear, as The Times has learnt, that Mr Serykh was suffering from severe mental health problems. No deportation order to remove him from the UK had been issued by the authorities at the time he and his family embarked on their macabre triple suicide — although official sources said they had had their benefit payments removed last month and were facing eviction from their YMCA flat in the notorious Red Road complex on the day that they died. Last night, as Strathclyde Police pieced together the mysterious tale of Mr Serykh, his blonde-haired wife, thought to be called Tatiana, and his 21-year-old stepson, sources told The Times of the bizarre background to a suicide pact that has shocked Scotland. ..."

House Resolution 645: Preparing for Unrest by Michel Chossudovsky [03/18/10] "The financial meltdown has unleashed a latent and emergent social crisis across the United States. What is at stake is the fraudulent confiscation of lifelong savings and pension funds, the appropriation of tax revenues to finance the trillion dollar "bank bailouts", which ultimately serve to line the pockets of the richest people in America. This economic crisis is in large part the result of financial manipulation and outright fraud to the detriment of entire populations, leading to a renewed wave of corporate bankruptcies, mass unemployment and poverty. The criminalization of the global financial system, characterized by a "Shadow Banking" network has resulted in the centralization of bank power and an unprecedented concentration of private wealth. Obama's "economic stimulus" package and budget proposals contribute to a further process of concentration and centralization of bank power, the cumulative effects of which will eventually result in large scale corporate, bankruptcies, a new wave of foreclosures not to mention fiscal collapse and the downfall of State social programs. (For further details see Michel Chossudovsky, America's Fiscal Collapse, Global Research, March 2, 2009). The cumulative decline of real economic activity backlashes on employment and wages, which in turn leads to a collapse in purchasing power. The proposed "solution" under the Obama administration contributes to exacerbating rather than alleviating social inequalities and the process of wealth concentration. . ..." National Emergency Centers Establishment Act (HR 645)
Note: "A bill entitled the National Emergency Centers Establishment Act (HR 645) was introduced in the US Congress in January. It calls for the establishment of six national emergency centers in major regions in the US to be located on existing military installations. The stated purpose of the "national emergency centers" is to provide "temporary housing, medical, and humanitarian assistance to individuals and families dislocated due to an emergency or major disaster." In actuality, what we are dealing with are FEMA internment camps. HR 645 states that the camps can be used to "meet other appropriate needs, as determined by the Secretary of Homeland Security." There has been virtually no press coverage of HR 645. These "civilian facilities" on US military bases are to be established in cooperation with the US Military. Modeled on Guantanamo, what we are dealing with is the militarization of FEMA internment facilities. Once a person is arrested and interned in a FEMA camp located on a military base, that person would in all likelihood, under a national emergency, fall under the de facto jurisdiction of the Military: civilian justice and law enforcement including habeas corpus would no longer apply. HR 645 bears a direct relationship to the economic crisis and the likelihood of mass protests across America. It constitutes a further move to militarize civilian law enforcement, repealing the Posse Comitatus Act .."
Social Networks: "Anything You Tweet Can Be Used Against You" [03/18/10] "On the afternoon of September 24, 2009, Pennsylvania State Troopers, their guns drawn, broke down the door of room 238 of the CareFree Inn on the outskirts of Pittsburgh. The troopers were acting on a search warrant related to protests planned for the G20 summit—a meeting of the heads of state of the world's major economies. Thousands of protesters had descended on the city, presenting demands ranging from curbs on carbon emissions to the outright abolition of capitalism. Anticipating hordes of black-masked, Starbucks-smashing anarchists, the Pittsburgh police and the Secret Service coordinated nearly 4,000 law enforcement officers, outfitting them with the latest in riot-dispersal technology. Crowds marching on the summit were met with pepper spray, stun grenades, and—for the first time on US soil—acoustic cannons that blast painful sounds as far as 1,000 feet. But the protesters had their own crowd-control methods, and that's what had brought the state troopers to the CareFree Inn. What they found when they broke down the door were a couple of middle-aged housemates from Queens, New York. Elliott Madison sat at a desk with a laptop and a cell phone. A police scanner lay nearby. Michael Wallschlaeger was at the minifridge grabbing some hummus when the police rushed in. According to the criminal complaint filed against them, the two men had been "communicating with various protestors, and protest groups...[via] internet based communications, more commonly known as 'Twitter'. The observed 'Twitter' communications were noted to be relevant to the direction of the movement of the Protestors...in order to avoid apprehension... ..."

Abu Zubaydah’s Torture Diary [03/17/10] "Abu Zubaydah’s testimony comes from the leaked ICRC report on the 14 "high-value detainees" who arrived in Guantánamo in September 2006, which was published last April by the New York Review of Books (PDF), and I’m posting it here because it complements the main themes of my article: that torture cannot be redefined, that what took place was demonstrably torture, that John Yoo deliberately ignored evidence that contradicted his agenda, and that hundreds of prisoners — both in Guantánamo and secret prisons — were subjected to some variation on the "enhanced interrogation techniques" that were approved for use on Abu Zubaydah in the "torture memos" written and approved by Yoo and Bybee. ........ I woke up, naked, strapped to a bed, in a very white room. The room measured approximately 4m x 4m. The room had three solid walls, with the fourth wall consisting of metal bars separating it from a larger room. I am not sure how long I remained in the bed. After some time, I think it was several days, but can’t remember exactly, I was transferred to a chair where I was kept, shackled by hands and feet for what I think was the next 2 to 3 weeks. During this time I developed blisters on the underside of my legs due to the constant sitting. I was only allowed to get up from the chair to go the toilet, which consisted of a bucket. Water for cleaning myself was provided in a plastic bottle. I was given no solid food during the first two or three weeks, while sitting on the chair. I was only given Ensure [a nutrient supplement] and water to drink. At first the Ensure made me vomit, but this became less with time. The cell and room were air-conditioned and were very cold. Very loud, shouting type music was constantly playing. It kept repeating about every fifteen minutes twenty-four hours a day. Sometimes the music stopped and was replaced by a loud hissing or crackling noise. The guards were American, but wore masks to conceal their faces. My interrogators did not wear masks....."
ACLU sues to obtain basic data, legal justification for Predator drone program [03/17/10] "The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit after federal agencies neglected to answer a Freedom of Information Act request seeking documents pertaining to the legal basis for the military's Predator drone program. The request specifically seeks information as to how the program is governed, who can be targeted, along with when and where, and the data on civilian casualties caused by the remote-controlled weapons. It was originally filed on Jan. 13 with the departments of defense and justice, along with the Central Intelligence Agency, none of which replied, according to the non-profit. "The public has a right to know whether the targeted killings being carried out in its name are consistent with international law and with the country's interests and values," said Jonathan Manes, a legal fellow with the ACLU National Security Project, in a media advisory. "The Obama administration should disclose basic information about the program, including its legal basis and limits, and the civilian casualty toll thus far." Meanwhile, the globalist thinktank Council on Foreign Relations is circulating an article by Harvard National Security Journal contributor Brett H. McGurk, offering a counter-point on the use of unmanned weapons of war, opening with a rather cold-cocked headline: "Lawyers: A Predator Drone's Achilles Heel?" ..."

Protecting agencies from oversight, Obama threatens to veto intelligence funding [03/17/10] "The White House is threatening to veto a key intelligence funding bill over what it considers to be a dangerous amount of oversight on covert agencies, according to published reports. ... The 2010 Intelligence Budget has gone through a number of key changes over the past few months, with House Democrats and the Obama administration butting heads over a number of provisions. Key among them for the latest White House veto threat is a provision that would allow the Government Accountability Office to investigate intelligence agencies. "Current law exempts intelligence and counterintelligence activities from GAO review, leaving oversight to the inspectors general at the various intelligence community agencies," Politico reported. In a letter to the House and Senate intelligence committees, Office of Management and Budget chief Peter Orszag highlighted several areas of the bill that have intelligence officials worried, including the GAO oversight provision. Orszag's letter also claims that proposed reforms to how Congress is notified of covert activities poses a "serious" threat that intelligence agencies object to." ..... "

Commentary: "The City of London Rules All Finance in the World" [03/17/10] "I cannot go into the detail of this since to do so might compromise the Official Secrets Act. Suffice to say this event was pivotal and key to later events in providing evidence for the existence of the Anglo-Saxon Mission or better described as the Timeline. Therefore, no more can be publicly said about this event, other than to state that this Timeline was very much in existence 35 years ago, backed up by a very creditable insider, later referred to as CW and from what I witnessed personally. During 1980's, due to certain personal career events, which I am not yet able to disclose, I could establish beyond any simple suspicion, that a future wartime government of the UK will be conservative, right wing in nature, and of high ranking military office, not civilian, with the officer cadre from all 3 services properly inducted to be in obedient support. I felt at the time that we would soon be in an extended state world wide armed conflict, where this type of totalitarian/military Government would be put in place. I continued on with my military career and was now project working with various military contractors such as BAE, Westland, and Plessey & Marconi Systems. It was during this time that I was introduced into the future naval weapons programmes then running in the late 80's and early 90's. However, by then, I was totally disillusioned and really did feel that ultra-right wing hands were at hard at work manipulating people and events. Again, what CW had told me (CW was insider, known since 1975 and whose identity still needs to be protected) previously told me came back with more solidity than I could have imagined. In effect CW was turning out to be right, and in effect, I had a major mindset change as I knew that everything I was told was based on ordinary people being kept compliant and ignorant. ..."

Related: Pelosi Readies “Self-executing” Fascism to Force Obamacare on Americans [03/17/10] "For Pelosi and the Democrats, this is not an issue. They don’t care if you don’t want Obamacare at gunpoint. They are ready to push through the bill by way of “self-executing rule,” also known as “deem-and-pass.” ... As House leaders looked for a path that could get the Senate legislation through the chamber and onto Obama’s desk, conservatives warned that Pelosi’s use of deem-and-pass in this way would run afoul of the Constitution. They pointed to a 1998 Supreme Court ruling that said each house of Congress must approve the exact same text of a bill before it can become law. A self-executing rule sidesteps that requirement. You may remember Pelosi’s dismissive comment about the Constitution. Back in October, she was asked what part of the Constitution authorizes the federal government to force all Americans to buy health care. “Are you serious? Are you serious?” she responded. Pelosi’s press spokesman, Nadeam Elshami, later clarified: asking the speaker of the House where the Constitution authorized Congress to mandated that individual Americans buy health insurance as not a “serious question.” ......."
Commentary: Journalist Jonathan Cook discusses increasingly repressive nature of Israel [03/17/10] "We should be extremely wary of ascribing a leftwing agenda to senior Israeli politicians who make use of the word "apartheid" in the Israeli-Palestinian context. Barak was not claiming that Israel is an apartheid state when he addressed the high-powered delegates at the Herzliya conference last month; he was warning the Netanyahu government that its approach to the two-state solution was endangering Israel's legitimacy in the eyes of the world that would eventually lead to it being called an apartheid state. He was politicking. His goal was to intimidate Netanyahu into signing up to his, and the Israeli centre's, long-standing agenda of "unilateral separation": statehood imposed on the Palestinians as a series of bantustans (be sure, the irony is entirely lost on Barak and others). Barak knows that Netanyahu currently has no intention of creating any kind of Palestinian state, even a bogus one, despite his commitments to the US."
Note: In a wide-ranging interview conducted by the New Left Project, journalist Jonathan Cook describes the increasingly repressive nature of Israeli society and the prospects for a solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
"It May Be Clever, But it is Not Constitutional" [03/16/10] "That is the way that Stanford Law Professor and Hoover Institution senior fellow Michael McConnell correctly characterizes the lunatic "Slaughter Solution" that Congressional Democrats are threatening to use, to try to ram through Obama's Nazi health bill. Under this approach, the House wouldn't actually vote for the Senate bill, but just "deem it" approved, at the same time that they vote to change it. That, of course, is a violation of Article I, Section 7 of the U.S. Constitution, which says that for a "Bill" to "become a law," it "shall have passed the House of Representatives and the Senate" and be "presented to the President of the United States" for signature or veto. McConnell adds that "challengers are salivating at the prospect of running against incumbents who vote for these provisions."

Uranium Mining Begins Near Grand Canyon [03/16/10] "In defiance of legal challenges and a U.S. Government moratorium, Canadian company Denison Mines has started mining uranium on the north rim of the Grand Canyon. According to the Arizona Daily Sun the mine has been operating since December 2009. Denison plans on extracting 335 tons of uranium ore per day out of the “Arizona 1 Mine”, which is set to operate four days per week. The hazardous ore will be hauled by truck more than 300 miles through towns and communities to the company’s White Mesa mill located near Blanding, Utah. After being pressured by environmental groups, U.S. Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar initially called for a two-year moratorium on new mining claims in a buffer zone of 1 million acres around Grand Canyon National Park, but the moratorium doesn’t include existing claims such as Denison’s. The moratorium also doesn’t address mining claims outside of the buffer zone. ..."
Commentary: US Readies Cyberwar, Virtual Flag Terrorism By Webster G. Tarpley [03/16/10] "Google is now preparing to leave China as a result of this company’s stubborn refusal to obey Chinese laws. Google is in effect demanding extraterritoriality and immunity to the legal norms of the host nation, a claim which goes back to the unequal treaties imposed by foreign imperialists, notably the British, on China starting in the 19th century. It is not surprising that the Chinese response to this arrogant interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state has been stern. We must also recall that Google was founded with the help of the US intelligence community, and is now acting as a virtual arm of the US National Security Agency, the electronic espionage department of the US government. Google-NSA’s arrogance and hypocrisy are unbearable, especially when we bear in mind the countless times that Google search engines have been used to suppress exposés of the US governments false flag operations, most notably 9/11, and other sensitive topics. There are two sides to the conflict between Google-NSA and China. One is the Great Cyberwall erected by the Chinese government against attempts by the US-UK to capitalize on ethnic and social tensions inside China to launch a color revolution, CIA people power coup, or postmodern putsch. The other aspect is Google’s claim that hackers working for the Chinese government raided Google’s e-mail servers. The second charge has been formally denied by the Chinese. Even as Google prepares to shut down its Chinese operations, something larger and more sinister is looming. The US Wall Street-controlled media are gearing up to educate the public about imminent cyberwarfare and cyber-conflict. We can sense that Andrew Marshall, the Pentagon’s infamous octogenarian Yoda of the Office of Net Assessment, is playing a key role behind the scenes. This effort was formally launched in May 2009 by none other than Obama, who announced a buildup of US cyberwar assets, illustrating his project with the claim that his own campaign websites had been hacked during the 2008 campaign, prompting him to seek the assistance of FBI, CIA, NSA and the rest. ..."

Family-farm advocates call for U.S. to ‘bust up big ag’ [03/15/10] "Whether they realized it or not, the roughly 250 family farmers, workers and consumers gathered in Ankeny, Iowa, Thursday night fired off their own point-by-point response to a letter from two Republican senators that urged the U.S. departments of agriculture and justice to maintain the existing status quo in the agriculture industry. ...The often rambunctious townhall event was organized by a coalition of groups concerned that everyday people do not have adequate opportunity to express their opinions on the agricultural industry at a joint U.S. Department of Justice and USDA antitrust workshop on Friday. As the acclaimed author of The True Story of the Bilderberg Group, Estulin is precisely the person to begin the elaborate investigative process of connecting the dots from the narcotics “underworld” of organized crime to the “upperworld” establishment elites of multinational banks, corporations, foundations, and media outlets in the global economic crisis. ..."

Pentagon gun was from Tenn. police [03/15/10] "Two guns used in high-profile shootings this year at the Pentagon and a Las Vegas courthouse both came from the same unlikely place: the police and court system of Memphis, Tenn. Law enforcement officials told The Associated Press that both guns were once seized in criminal cases in Memphis. The officials described how the weapons made their separate ways from an evidence vault to gun dealers and to the shooters. The use of guns that once were in police custody and were later involved in attacks on police officers highlights a little-known divide in gun policy in the United States: Many cities and states destroy guns gathered in criminal probes, but others sell or trade the weapons in order to get other guns or buy equipment such as bulletproof vests. In fact, on the day of the Pentagon shooting, March 4, the Tennessee governor signed legislation revising state law on confiscated guns. Before, law enforcement agencies in the state had the option of destroying a gun. Under the new version, agencies can only destroy a gun if it’s inoperable or unsafe. Kentucky has a similar law, but it’s not clear how many other states have laws specifically designed to promote the police sale or trade of confiscated weapons. A nationwide review by The Associated Press in December found that over the previous two years, 24 states – mostly in the South and West, where gun-rights advocates are particularly strong – have passed 47 new laws loosening gun restrictions. Gun rights groups are making a greater effort to pass favorable legislation in state capitals. John Timoney, who led the Philadelphia and Miami police departments and served as New York’s No. 2 police official, said he doesn’t believe police departments should be putting more guns into the market.
“I just think it’s unseemly for police departments to be selling guns that later turn up,” he said, recalling that he had once been offered the chance to sell guns to raise money for the police budget. “Obviously, we always need the money but I just said, ‘No, we will take the loss and get rid of the guns’,” said the former police chief, who now works for Andrews International, a security consulting firm. ..."

Shortly after initiating legal action to suppress a document on how to subpoena online user data Microsoft withdrew the complaint, and the website was restored.

Hillary Rodham Clinton's harsh words stun Israel [03/14/10] " ...Beginning as a spat over a single housing project, a dispute this week between the Obama administration and Israel has ballooned into the biggest U.S.-Israeli clash in 20 years, adding to months of strain between Washington and one of its closest allies. Israel's decision to move ahead with 1,600 new housing units in East Jerusalem, announced during a visit by Vice President Joe Biden, drew criticism from Washington in language rarely directed at even Iran or North Korea. Clinton said Israel's announcement "was an insult to the United States." In a 45-minute telephone call Friday to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Clinton upbraided him and demanded that he take more steps to show his nation's commitment to peace. A senior U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity in the midst of the diplomatic friction, described the administration's objection to the project as "the first time the U.S. has really pushed back hard.""
Note: Note that it is Palestinian news reporting this ... it's what she wants them to think . But, this doesn't square with the fact that Clinton is due to speak at the AIPAC Conference on March 22nd ...the Palestinians are too inattentive to see the larger picture - they're caught up in their own drama, and have a lot of unsupported assumptions about the US and Israel. For them, "hope springs eternal", but it's fading fast. Hillary, however, is in her own fictitious 'movie' on the 'world stage' and believes she is a 'powerful person' ... but she's pathetic. She doesn't figure that people will realize that her 'condemnation' is fictitious, underlining her disingenuous nature even further. Note the recent visits between Netanyahu and US representatives over the last couple of months. It's a 'we'll say this, but we won't mean it, and you will respond that ...." kind of thing. CIA chemically terrorised French village in 1950's [03/13/10] "In 1951 a quiet village in southern France was suddenly and mysteriously struck down with mass insanity and hallucinations. At least five people died, dozens were committed to asylums and hundreds afflicted. Now, evidence suggests that the CIA peppered food with the hallucinogenic drug LSD as part of a mind-control experiment at the height of the Cold War. H.P. Albarelli jnr, an investigative journalist, claims the outbreak resulted from a covert experiment directed by the CIA and the U.S. army's top-secret Special Operations Division at Fort Detrick, Maryland. During the 1950s, the U.S. launched a vast research program into the mental manipulation of prisoners and enemy troops. The Slaughter Solution and Other Acts of Desperation
[03/13/10] "Team Obama is looking for ways to pass the Democrats’ health care bill without, you know, precisely passing it. ...Is it “end-game” time in the debate over what to do with American health care? The other day, some industrious blogger — it might have been the Drudge Report — posted an amusing list of headlines from the past year or so, each announcing that, at long last, we’d reached the “end game” in the debate over health. Just yesterday, President Obama said again that “the time to talk” was over: the time to vote had come. He didn’t really mean that, of course, because were a vote taken now, his plan to have the government usurp a sixth of the U.S. economy and institute top-down socialized medicine in the Unite States would fail. As a result, Team Obama has been exerting the old cerebellum to discover some way of passing the Democrats’ health care bill without, you know, precisely passing it. Even if you question their ethics, you have to admire their ingenuity. Last month it was “reconciliation”: that administrative tool was all the rage. A technique used to patch over budgetary anomalies was going to be hauled in to revolutionize a major social program that had no bipartisan support whatsoever. That wasn’t going down with the public too well. So although reconciliation is still on the table (or, rather, up the Reid-Pelosi sleeve) the latest wheeze is “The Slaughter Solution,” named for Rep. Louise Slaughter (NY, “D,” of course). Would you like to enact some legislation without the inconvenience (to say noting of the accountability) of actually voting for it? The Washington Examiner explains how you can do it: In the Slaughter Solution, the rule would declare that the House “deems” the Senate version of Obamacare to have been passed by the House. House members would still have to vote on whether to accept the rule, but they would then be able to say they only voted for a rule, not for the bill itself .... "

Former CIA Pilot Tells of Guns and Drugs Shipments [03/12/10] "Last week’s tragic shooting of two guards at the Pentagon was definitely the result of a mentally unbalanced individual who apparently was consumed with the death of Marine Colonel James Sabow at MCAS El Toro in January 1991. The truth is that experts outside of the Defense Department believe that the forensic evidence supports that Colonel Sabow was murdered. According to Dr. David Sabow MD, his brother, the motive was to prevent him from telling about the shipments of cocaine into the U.S. to fund the Contra war in the 80s. The Orange County coroner, the Naval Investigative Service, the Marine Corps and subsequent Defense Department investigations ruled Colonel Sabow’s death a suicide. Independent investigations by others and the overwhelming forensic evidence strongly suggests murder. There was no reason in the world after Vietnam, 27 years in the Marine Corps with an outstanding record, the rank of colonel and a wife and children, that Col. Sabow would commit this act. ..."
AIPAC of Raving Lunatics [03/12/10] "Without regard for the severe economic devastation and loss of life that a war with Iran would create, Israel’s agents in the United States continue to aggressively stoke the fires of anti-Iranian rhetoric and mobilize their minions on the floor of the House. The Brzezinski-Soros machine failed in their attempt to effect regime change in Iran by way of a “color revolution” in the summer of 2009. Dissenters To Be Detained As “Enemy Belligerents”? [03/12/10] "The “Enemy Belligerent, Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010,” introduced by Senators John McCain and Joseph Lieberman on Thursday with little fanfare, “sets out a comprehensive policy for the detention, interrogation and trial of suspected enemy belligerents who are believed to have engaged in hostilities against the United States by requiring these individuals to be held in military custody, interrogated for their intelligence value and not provided with a Miranda warning (but it doesn't mean that Miranda rights don't apply!),” ...innumerable other leaked documents, now consider virtually anyone with a dissenting opinion against the state as “posing a threat,” .... according to the bill, an individual doesn’t even have to pose a threat to be snatched, detained and interrogated – they can merely be deemed to be of “potential intelligence value” or come under the vague and sweeping mandate of “such other matters as the President considers appropriate”. This last designation hands Obama dictator powers to have any American citizen kidnapped, detained, and interrogated on a whim. .... The only proviso that even hints at some form of check or balance is the measure that states, “The High-Value Detainee Interrogation Team must make a preliminary determination whether the detainee is an unprivileged enemy belligerent within 48 hours of taking detainee into custody.” The ACLU has expressed its vigorous opposition to the legislation, labeling it nothing less than a “direct attack on the Constitution”. “Indefinite detention flies in the face of American values and violates this country’s commitment to the rule of law,” states Laura W. Murphy, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office. Of course, such positions from the ACLU as well as Amnesty International will only be used as grist for the neo-con propaganda mill about how the bill ought to be passed in order to avoid being “soft on terrorists,” a piece of spin still being swallowed whole by millions of conservatives who are blissfully unaware of the fact that the apparatus of the war on terror is now being aimed squarely at politically active American citizens. “Torture, indefinite imprisonment, secret trials and limited staged hearings are the stuff of cheap dictatorships,” writes Ian McColgin. “They are the sort of idiocy we scorned in the Soviets, the Koreans and the Vietnamese. Americans to protest NY fundraiser for IOF [03/10/10] "Nearly a thousand people are expected to turn out for a large anti-Israel protest outside a fundraiser for the Israeli Occupation (Defense) Forces on Tuesday in New York City. ...Focusing on IOF actions during the Gaza war, protesters plan to march outside the Waldorf Astoria hotel, where the Friends of the IDF will host a $1,000-a-plate dinner. IOF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, who is traveling to New York and Washington this week for talks with senior American officials, is scheduled to deliver the dinner's keynote address. But Ashkenazi will be traveling with an extra layer of security amid reports of the protest, with one article calling him the "Butcher of Gaza." The protest is being sponsored by a broad coalition of about 25 left-wing groups, including American Jews for a Just Peace, Codepink, Gaza Freedom March and Jewish Voice for Peace. Organized by Jews Say No!, the protest was endorsed by the Israeli groups Coalition of Women for Peace and Boycott! Supporting the Palestinian Call for BDS From Within. "We think it's inappropriate for an American organization to be feting the Israeli army, when the Israeli army is implicated in violations of international law," said Rebecca Vilkomerson, director of Jewish Voice for Peace. She said Operation Cast Lead opened up people's eyes to the role that the Israeli army plays. The Goldstone Report also made people consider the notion that the IOF is fallible, she added. "Definitely, it has opened up a big conversation in the Jewish community," she said, observing that in the past year more Jews have begun "questioning the idea that Israel is always right." Ashkenazi arrived in Washington Monday for a round of meetings expected to focus largely on Iran. Later he is due to head to Capitol Hill, where he will meet with Sen. John McCain, a Republican who is the ranking member on Congress's Armed Services Committee. He is then scheduled to meet with U.S. National Security Adviser James Jones and will breakfast with his counterpart, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Commentary: "Confronting Kleptocracy–Identifying The Looter Mentality" [03/10/10] "A recent opinion column The New York Times was titled: The Moral Ambiguity of Looting. Ambiguity? There is nothing ambiguous about it. Let’s have the moral courage to be forthright and uncompromising on this issue: Looting is the theft of property that lawfully belongs to another. There are no “ifs, ands, or buts”. Looting is unconscionable and cannot be tolerated in a civilized society. Once looting begins, it soon devolves into: “You have it, I want it, I’m taking it.” And once looting is sanctioned, then where is the dividing line on “acceptable” plunder? Do you draw the line at: Twinkies? Trinkets? Televisions? Teenage daughters? In essence, looting is pure, unmitigated anarchy in action. None of it is acceptable behavior. .... It is noteworthy that much of the looting that went on in Chile was not about parents keeping their kids from starving. Rather, it was more about people wanting television sets. Every reader of this blog needs to make a moral choice: Do you tolerate looting or not? I pray that you don’t. If you assent to theft, then don’t be surprised if you come home someday to find your own house looted. As a Christian Libertarian, I’m an advocate of minimalist government. But a society needs some basic laws enforced, or it ceases to be classified as a civilized society. Its clear that law and order being re-established in Chile. But things were dicey there for a few days, and it took more than the just police and army to put the societal trolley back on its tracks. .... I’m often asked about depopulation caused by pandemics–how that would be a time that would justify looting. That’s just speculative balderdash. Even in darkest days of The Black Death, when Europe and much of southern Asia lost half of its population, there were still “heirs and assigns.” (If you doubt that, then see William McNeil’s book “Plagues and Peoples”.) It would take a pandemic with a 90% lethality rate or more before that convention would become meaningless. So forget your “It’ll be just like Will Smith and his dog, in I Am Legend” fantasies. The chances of an event causing that level of depopulation, and the even smaller chance of you being one of the lucky few survivors are almost infinitesimal. In all other circumstances, there will be rightful owners or rightful heirs of every piece of land, every vehicle, every tool, every cow, and every larder on Earth. So discard any fanciful “foraging” musings that you might harbor . ..."

The critics weigh in: ... * Most posthumous Hendrix releases have been “exploitive scraps,” writes Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune. “But Valleys of Neptune is legit—not quite a lost album, but darn near close.” This is a raw, “you-are-there document” of the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s volatile final days. * The title track is a “revelation,” writes Chris Richards of the Washington Post. You’d almost think Hendrix was playing from the great beyond. “You can hear the music happening—a distinct, 21st-century pleasure that feels both quaint and mysterious.” * But Tom Sinclair of EW disagrees. If you’re expecting new musical frontiers “keep dreaming,” he writes. “Most of these tunes are glaringly familiar.” * In fact, a quick YouTube check reveals that diehard fans have already found these songs, notes Ann Powers of the LA Times. But Hendrix’s “guitar playing is an inexhaustible thrill, even when he's just messing around.”"

Companies vying to build NSA data center in Utah [03/07/10] "A partnership has identified itself as in the running to build a sprawling electronic data center for the nation's intelligence agencies in Utah. Salt Lake City-based Jacobsen Construction is teaming up with New York-based Turner Construction Co. and Kiewit Co. of Omaha, Neb. The partners say that building the 1 million-square-foot data center in less than three years will be a monumental undertaking. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it isn't releasing the names of any companies who submitted qualification proposals Feb. 24 on the $1.7 billion construction project for the National Security Agency. ..."
Note: Turner Construction is wholly owned by none other than Hochtief AG – Adolph Hitler’s construction giant. All of the Nazi defenses on both the Eastern and Western Fronts were built by Hochtief – including Hitler’s infamous “Wolf’s Lair”, his Berghoff castle retreat, the “Fuherbunker” in Berlin, equipped with numerous hidden exit tunnels, and of course all of the concentration camp labor was used free of charge by Hochtief. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hochtief Funny how Turner Construction handled the cleanup of the World Trade Center, as well as Oklahoma City’s Murrah building. They built the United Nations building! I think it’s safe to say that Hochtief AG/Turner is the Illuminati’s contractor. Background: In a place called “Camp Williams”, 30 miles south of Salt Lake City, Utah – the American taxpayer is being asked to spend at least $2 billion dollars for a new, state-of-the-art National Security Agency “data collection center”. This “data center” will be spread over 200 acres and have 1 million square feet of building to house a “new generation” of supercomputer that will consume at least 36 Megawatts of electricity – currently more than the entire City of Salt Lake consumes! What type of new computer, given the advances in NANOTECHNOLOGY outlined in this paper, would need to consume this much electricity and span this large of a secure facility? What exactly is this “data center” intended to do? The current NSA facility already is extremely effective in utilizing its satellite spying and hacking — what exactly is the “next level” they wish to access? Unfortunately, all requests for even the most basic disclosures have been ignored by all levels of the “intelligence” community.
The Moral Dimension of Things: Why Political Leaders Lie Most of the Time [03/07/10] "We are presently living in one of those times, characterized by deep and entrenched political corruption, by routine abuse of power and disregard for the rule of law in high places, and by unchecked greed, fraud and deception in the economic sphere. The results are all there to see: Severe and prolonged economic and financial crises, rising social inequalities and social injustice, increasing intolerance toward individual choices, the disregard for environmental decay, the rise of religious absolutism, a return to whimsical wars of aggression (or of pre-emptive wars), to blind terrorism and to the repugnant use of torture, and even to genocide and to blatant war crimes. These are all indicators that our civilization has lost its moral compass. With all these throwbacks to an unpalatable past, it is not surprising there is a resurgence of interest nowadays for questions of morality and of ethics. ..."

U.S. District Judge Wayne R. Andersen's ruling did not say the two contractors had proven any of their claims. But it did say they had alleged enough specific mistreatment to warrant hearing evidence of exactly what happened. Andersen said his decision "represents a recognition that federal officials may not strip citizens of well settled constitutional protections against mistreatment simply because they are located in a tumultuous foreign setting." Andersen did throw out two of the lawsuit's three counts but gave former contractors Donald Vance and Nathan Ertel the green light to go forward with a third count alleging they were unconstitutionally tortured under procedures personally approved by Rumsfeld. ..."

America, the fragile empire: Here today, gone tomorrow -- could the United States fall that fast? [03/06/10] "For centuries, historians, political theorists, anthropologists and the public have tended to think about the political process in seasonal, cyclical terms. From Polybius to Paul Kennedy, from ancient Rome to imperial Britain, we discern a rhythm to history. Great powers, like great men, are born, rise, reign and then gradually wane. No matter whether civilizations decline culturally, economically or ecologically, their downfalls are protracted. In the same way, the challenges that face the United States are often represented as slow-burning. It is the steady march of demographics -- which is driving up the ratio of retirees to workers -- not bad policy that condemns the public finances of the United States to sink deeper into the red. It is the inexorable growth of China's economy, not American stagnation, that will make the gross domestic product of the People's Republic larger than that of the United States by 2027. ..."

Poppy cultivation: Russia lambastes NATO [03/06/10] "Over the past few years Afghan heroin consumption has grown into a major health problem in Russia. Based on matching data from the UN and the Russia's federal drug control agency, poppy production has jumped 40 times since the US intervention in Afghanistan, reaching 7 500 tons in 2008. The poppy plantations cover a surface of some 193 000 hertares. Once harvested, the opium poppy is processed into heroin and morphine through the use of imported chemicals. 92% of the plantations and laboratories are located in zones controlled by NATO troops. In 2008, heroin manufactured in Afghanistan took a toll of more than 100 000 worldwide. Consequently, Moscow has decided to take up the issue of NATO's responsibility with the U.N. Security Council. Officially, US policy makers are against fumigating the poppy fields to avoid antagonizing the Afghan farmers. They prefer to curb the entry of the chemical agents required. ..." US House votes killing of Armenians as 'genocide' [03/05/10] "The House Foreign Affairs Committee voted narrowly on Thursday to condemn as genocide the mass killings of Armenians early in the last century, defying a last-minute plea from the Obama administration to forgo a vote that seemed sure to offend Turkey and jeopardize delicate efforts at Turkish-Armenian reconciliation. The vote on the nonbinding resolution, a perennial point of friction addressing a dark, century-old chapter of Turkish history, was 23 to 22. A similar resolution passed by a slightly wider margin in 2007, but the Bush administration, fearful of losing Turkish cooperation over Iraq, lobbied forcefully to keep it from reaching the House floor. Whether this resolution will reach a floor vote remains unclear. In Ankara, the capital, the office of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan immediately issued a sharp rebuke. “We condemn this bill that denounces the Turkish nation of a crime that it has not committed,” the statement said. Ambassador Namik Tan, who had only weeks ago taken up his post in Washington, has been recalled to Ankara for consultations, according to the statement. Historians say that as many as 1.5 million Armenians died amid the chaos and unrest surrounding World War I and the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire. Turkey denies, however, that this was a planned genocide, and had mounted a vigorous lobbying campaign against the resolution. ..."

Maryland’s SWAT transparency bill produces its first disturbing results [03/05/10] "... Last year Maryland became the first state in the country to make every one of its police departments issue a report on how often and for what purpose they use their SWAT teams. The first reports from the legislation are in, and the results are disturbing. ...Over the last six months of 2009, SWAT teams were deployed 804 times in the state of Maryland, or about 4.5 times per day. In Prince George’s County alone, with its 850,000 residents, a SWAT team was deployed about once per day. According to a Baltimore Sun analysis, 94 percent of the state’s SWAT deployments were used to serve search or arrest warrants, leaving just 6 percent in response to the kinds of barricades, bank robberies, hostage takings, and emergency situations for which SWAT teams were originally intended ... Worse even than those dreary numbers is the fact that more than half of the county’s SWAT deployments were for misdemeanors and nonserious felonies. That means more than 100 times last year Prince George’s County brought state-sanctioned violence to confront people suspected of nonviolent crimes. And that’s just one county in Maryland. These outrageous numbers should provide a long-overdue wake-up call to public officials about how far the pendulum has swung toward institutionalized police brutality against its citizenry, usually in the name of the drug war .... The Maryland state law, as noted, is the first of its kind in the country, and will hopefully serve as a model for other states in adding some much-needed transparency to the widespread use and abuse of SWAT teams. And some Maryland legislators want to go even further. State Sen. Anthony Muse (D-Prince George’s), for example, wants to require a judge’s signature before police can deploy a SWAT team. Muse has sponsored another bill that would ban the use of SWAT teams for misdemeanor offenses. The latter seems like a no-brainer, but it’s already facing strong opposition from law enforcement interests. Police groups opposed the transparency bill, too .... Lawmakers tend to be wary of questioning law enforcement officials, particularly when it comes to policing tactics. They shouldn’t be. If anything, the public employees who are entrusted with the power to use force, including lethal force, deserve the most scrutiny. It’s unfortunate that it took a violent raid on a fellow public official for Maryland’s policymakers to finally take notice of tactics that have been used on Maryland citizens for decades now. But at least these issues are finally on the table. Lawmakers in other states should take notice. It’s time to have a national discussion on the wisdom of sending phalanxes of cops dressed like soldiers into private homes in search of nonviolent and consensual crimes."

State Crimes Against Democracy [03/05/10] "New research in the journal American Behavioral Scientist (Sage publications, February 2010) addresses the concept of “State Crimes Against Democracy” (SCAD). Professor Lance deHaven-Smith from Florida State University writes that SCADs involve highlevel government officials, often in combination with private interests, that engage in covert activities for political advantages and power. Proven SCADs since World War II include McCarthyism (fabrication of evidence of a communist infiltration), Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (President Johnson and Robert McNamara falsely claimed North Vietnam attacked a US ship), burglary of the office of Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist in effort to discredit Ellsberg, the Watergate break-in, Iran-Contra, Florida’s 2000 Election (felon disenfranchisement program), and fixed intelligence on WMDs to justify the Iraq War. Other suspected SCADs include the assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald, the shooting of George Wallace, the October Surprise near the end of the Carter presidency, military grade anthrax mailed to Senators Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy, Martin Luther King’s assassination, and the collapse of World Trade Center Building 7 on September 11, 2001. The proven SCADs have a long trail of congressional hearings, public records, and academic research establishing the truth of the activities. The suspected SCADs listed above have substantial evidence of covert actions with countervailing deniability that tend to leave the facts in dispute. The term “conspiracy theory” is often used to denigrate and discredit inquiry into the veracity of suspected SCADs. Labeling SCAD research as “conspiracy theory” is an effective method of preventing ongoing investigations from being reported in the corporate media and keep them outside of broader public scrutiny. Psychologist Laurie Manwell, University of Guelph, addresses the psychological advantage that SCAD actors hold in the public sphere. Manwell, writing in American Behavioral Scientist (Sage 2010) states, “research shows that people are far less willing to examine information that disputes, rather than confirms, their beliefs . . . pre- existing beliefs can interfere with SCADs inquiry, especially in regards to September 11, 2001 ...."
2009 Financial Report Of The U.S. Government Is Out – America’s Economic Goose Is Cooked [03/05/10] "The 2009 Financial Report Of The U.S. Government has finally been released, and the news is not good. It basically confirms much of what we already know - that the United States government is a complete financial mess. The U.S. government budget deficit for 2009 was a record-setting 1.417 trillion dollars. The total liabilities of the U.S. government rose from 12.178 trillion dollars at the end of 2008 to 14.123 trillion dollars by the end of 2009. At their present rates of growth, the interest on the national debt and spending on entitlement programs will gobble up almost every single dollar of federal revenue by the end of the decade. Throughout the report, the word "unsustainable" is repeatedly used. The authors of the report understand that the U.S. government simply cannot keep spending and borrowing like it has been recently. But if the U.S. government slows down this reckless spending even a little bit it could literally plunge the U.S. economy into a deflationary depression. In fact, even with all of the "bailouts" and "stimulus packages" there are many who would argue that we are already in a depression. In any event, the authors of the report make it clear that the United States government is facing a financial crisis of unprecedented magnitude. ..."

U.S. Fails To Hold Military Contractors Accountable For Waste And Abuse In Afghanistan [03/04/10] "In the past eight years, the United States has allocated $51 billion to rebuild and stabilize Afghanistan. But tracking that money sometimes seems as challenging as finding the leaders of the Taliban. No one keeps an exact count of the number of private contractors working in Afghanistan -- even though Congress ordered that be done more than two years ago. There's no central list of all the contracts now in force. Government auditors cannot determine with confidence if the reconstruction money is being properly spent or meets the stated objectives. And efforts to improve coordination among the key U.S. agencies managing the money -- the Pentagon, the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development -- have lagged at best. ..."

Despite deaths, Army awards $2.8b contract to KBR [03/04/10] "Defense juggernaut KBR Inc. was awarded a contract potentially worth $2.8 billion for support work in Iraq as U.S. forces continue to leave the country, military authorities said Tuesday. KBR was notified of the award Friday, a day after the company told shareholders it lost about $25 million in award fees because of flawed electrical work in Iraq. The Houston-based company was charged with maintaining the barracks where Staff Sgt. Ryan Maseth of Pittsburgh, a 24-year-old Green Beret, was electrocuted in 2008 while showering. The company has denied wrongdoing, and investigators said in August there was “insufficient evidence to prove or disprove” that anyone was criminally culpable in Maseth’s death. The uproar over his death triggered a review of 17 other electrocution deaths in Iraq and widespread inspections and repairs of electrical work in Iraq, much of it performed by KBR. ..."

The former White House political adviser blames himself for not pushing back against claims that President George W. The president, he adds, did not knowingly mislead the American public about the existence of such weapons. ..."

Israel and the US accuse Iran of seeking nuclear arms, as Tel Aviv threatens to attack Iranian nuclear installations and Washington warns of keeping 'all options on the table,' including economic sanctions and military measures. Commentary: Hitler’s “Big Lie” reborn: US lies for war with Iran bigger, more Orwellian than war lies with Iraq [03/04/10] "The American public is being played; duped into one unlawful War of Aggression after another. The criminal perpetrator of these war lies is a controlling faction of our own government. The evidence in this article will prove beyond any doubt that “war lies” is the accurate term; lies in Orwellian opposite of the verifiable facts, lies that cannot be reasonably construed as misinterpretations or well-intended mistakes. These are what political historians reference as “Big Lies;” so massive and evil that ordinary citizens initially reject the objective evidence because they can’t imagine their leadership being literal psychopaths. Big Lies evoke sufficient cognitive dissonance for the public to embrace the Big Lie…but only for a time. ..."
'U.S. seeks to restrain any Israeli plan to attack Iran' [03/03/10] "U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will address the Israeli public directly next week during a speech he is scheduled to deliver at Tel Aviv University, focusing on American commitment to Israel's security, Iran's nuclear program and the peace process. Senator John Kerry, hinted that Biden's visit to Israel, and that of other senior administration officials, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Michael Mullen, aims at restraining Israel against the possibility of unilaterally attacking Iran. The political portion of [Biden's] visit will likely concentrate on the Iranian nuclear question, with Biden stressing before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the U.S. expects Israel to assist in the effort to foil, using diplomatic means, Iran's nuclear ambitions through the imposition of effective sanctions at the UN Security Council, thus avoiding unilateral steps that may include an attack on Iran's nuclear installations. MS: Be Careful With Those Function Keys [03/03/10] "Microsoft Corp. has a message for Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003 users: If you browse the Interwebs with Internet Explorer 6, 7, or 8, take care to ignore any prompts that ask you to hit the F1 key on your keyboard, as doing so may be unhealthful to your PC. It turns out that there is a security flaw in the way these operating systems + browser versions process “Windows Help files” in such a way that is entirely unhelpful. That is, clicking on the F1 key when presented with a specially crafted pop-up box prompting you to do so could allow criminals to download and install malicious software to your computer. Thankfully, most Windows users are more likely to locate the “any” key on their systems before they realize that the “Function 1″ key is but the first of 12 such keys situated just above the left-to-right number keys on the standard Windows keyboard. Indeed, most Windows users’ first experience with these function keys is when something goes wrong with Windows. In a security advisory issued Monday, Microsoft said it may at some point issue a software update to address this shortcoming. ..."

The Other Victims of Battlefield Stress; Defense Contractors’ Mental Health Neglected [03/02/10] "Wade Dill does not figure into the toll of war dead. An exterminator, Dill took a job in Iraq for a company contracted to do pest control on military bases. There, he found himself killing disease-carrying flies and rabid dogs, dodging mortars and huddling in bomb shelters. Dill, a Marine Corps veteran, was a different man when he came back for visits here, his family said: moody, isolated, morose. He screamed at his wife and daughter. His weight dropped. Dark circles haunted his dark brown eyes. Wade Dill Three weeks after he returned home for good, Dill booked a room in an anonymous three-story motel alongside Interstate 5. There, on July 16, 2006, he shot himself in the head with a 9 mm handgun. He left a suicide note for his wife and a picture for his daughter, then 16. The caption read: "I did exist and I loved you.'' More than three years later, Dill's loved ones are still reeling, their pain compounded by a drawn-out battle with an insurance company over death benefits from the suicide. Barb Dill, 47, nearly lost the family’s home to foreclosure. "We’re circling the drain," she said. While suicide among soldiers has been a focus of Congress and the public, relatively little attention has been paid to the mental health of tens of thousands of civilian contractors returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. When they make the news at all, contractors are usually in the middle of scandal, depicted as cowboys, wastrels or worse. No agency tracks how many civilian workers have killed themselves after returning from the war zones. A small study in 2007 found that 24 percent of contract employees from DynCorp, a defense contractor, showed signs of depression or post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, after returning home. The figure is roughly equivalent to those found in studies of returning soldiers. ..."

Nearly 300 bills that have passed in the House since the current 111th Congress took office 14 months ago have been blocked in the Senate by Republican filibusters. Judge Backs Release of Plane Registration List [03/02/10] "A federal judge in Washington, D.C., rejected a commercial airline association's bid to stop the Federal Aviation Administration from releasing a list of private aircraft registration numbers to a public interest group. ... The National Business Aviation Association, which represents more than 8,000 companies, sued the FAA for planning to release a blocked list to ProPublica Inc., an investigative public interest group that requested the information in December 2008. The FAA agreed to comply with ProPublica's Freedom of Information Act request because it said the list did not contain commercial information. But the aviation association argued that it did, saying disclosing plane details could help competitors track corporate executive travel and business deals. U.S. District Court Judge Rosemary Collyer ruled that the FAA's decision to release the list was not arbitrary or capricious. "[T]he block list is a list of numbers only, unaccompanied by narrative," Collyer wrote, agreeing with the FAA's claim that the numbers themselves were not commercial information. "The Aviation Association's speculation that the registration numbers might be used to obtain historical location information and that location information might be used for insight into the nature of a company's business dealings does not convert the aircraft registration numbers themselves into commercial information," she added. The blocked list contains the name of the owner who sought to block the data from the FAA data feed, the make and model of the aircraft, and historic location tracking data, according to the ruling. Releasing the information does not provide instantaneous data on a plane's location, the ruling states. Collyer added that releasing the list does not endanger corporate personnel, because the list only provides aircraft registration numbers, not passenger names. The judge granted the FAA's motion for summary judgment and rejected a similar motion by the aviation association." Check Aircraft Tail Number at the FAA
‘Don’t Trust Your Government’ [03/02/10] "Writes Andrew Fitzgerald: My wife had the Today Show on this morning to which I usually don’t pay any attention, but Matt Lauer was interviewing Harry Markopolos who I had seen interviewed before on Frontline. Markopolos was a competing trader tasked with figuring out Madoff’s secret to such great returns. He said that he conclusively determined his operation to be a fraud in 30 minutes and over the next several years informed the SEC four separate times. He said that the big problem with the SEC was that they’re staffed with lawyers who don’t know anything about money and investigating. I remember in the Frontline piece he said that it would have been easy enough for the SEC to contact every broker on the NYSE and find that none had ever placed a trade for Madoff. The great parts of his interview this morning were when Lauer questioned him about his fears of being threatened by Madoff. Markopolos said that he bought a gun and if he were personally threatened by Madoff he planned to kill him since, “it was either him or me.” Lauer looks at him quizzically asking how he would explain that to law enforcement. Markopolos, who doesn’t exactly look like a Charles Bronson vigilante, said “well I’d hope not to get caught. I certainly had some good Army training, and it was really him or me. I had a family to protect. The government wasn’t protecting me; they were not doing their jobs, and I felt forced into a rather difficult moral dilemma.” Lauer ends the interview by asking him what lessons should investors learn from this mess. He answers, “don’t trust your government.” ..."

Senator Rangel Denies Breaking Rules on Caribbean Trips, but Here Are the Questions He Still Faces [03/02/10] "The House ethics committee wagged its finger at Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., on Thursday for taking corporate-sponsored trips to the Caribbean in 2007 and 2008, a violation of congressional rules. But those trips are just the tip of the iceberg of ethics allegations that Rangel is facing. (Here’s our backgrounder on the panoply of allegations against Rangel.) The Caribbean trips were organized by the nonprofit Carib News Foundation and attended by members of the Congressional Black Caucus, which has itself come under scrutiny lately. The ethics committee found that the other members were in the clear because the nonprofit misled them about the sources of funding. Two members of Rangel’s staff, however, knew that corporations had contributed funds to the nonprofit specifically for those Caribbean conferences. (The sources of funding were hardly a secret, though: The event’s program clearly listed its corporate sponsors, according to The Wall Street Journal, and conference posters were dotted with corporate logos.) The fact that the trips were paid for by corporations was first reported by the New York Post and the conservative National Legal and Policy Center, which filed the complaint (PDF) with the ethics committee. ..."

The Saddest Story [03/02/10] "One of the most unusual books and far-and-away the saddest I have ever read is James Douglass's "JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters." This is the best documented account ever produced of why and how the CIA assassinated John F. Kennedy. That the CIA did this is beyond dispute, and that the first President Bush was involved is well established by Russ Baker's book "Family of Secrets." What separates Douglass's book from the pack is his account of how Kennedy lived his final months, the actions he took that turned the CIA against him but saved the world from a nuclear holocaust and -- had he lived -- would probably have avoided the Vietnam War and brought the Cold War to a swift and peaceful conclusion. ..."
Revisionism and the Historical Blackout [03/02/10] "The First World War and American intervention therein marked an ominous turning point in the history of the United States and of the world. Those who can remember "the good old days" before 1914 inevitably look back to those times with a very definite and justifiable feeling of nostalgia. There was no income tax before 1913, and that levied in the early days after the amendment was adopted was little more than nominal. All kinds of taxes were relatively low. We had only a token national debt of around a billion dollars, which could have been paid off in a year without causing even a ripple in national finance. The total federal budget in 1913 was $724,512,000, just about 1 percent of the present astronomical budget. ..."
A Society of Criminals [03/02/10] "Recently, a friend of mine complained about a spate of burglaries that had occurred near her newly bought home. A house down the street from hers had been burgled in the weeks before, and her next-door neighbor had been burgled not long afterward. In the latter case, the thieves had made off with a large-screen plasma television set and a laptop computer, apparently having walked out of the house with them in broad daylight. My friend was evidently disgusted by this thievery — as well she should be — and seemed to have difficulty comprehending how the people responsible could bring themselves to break into a home and take what did not belong to them. "How dare they!" she said. "What makes them think they have the right to do this?" That is a fair question. What does make them think they have a right to do this? Well, perhaps they know they have no right to do this, but they do it anyway because their desire for the unearned has more weight to them than their respect for the property rights of others. Perhaps they rationalized their crime on the basis of some purported need, brought about — no doubt — by having been "marginalized" by society. On the attitude of these particular thieves we can only speculate. But more generally, we may ask, why is it that a criminal feels comfortable taking property that he has not earned? ..."
Investigate the doctors who helped oversee U.S. torture [03/02/10] "It is hardly news that medical staff at the C.I.A. and the Pentagon played a critical role in developing and carrying out torture procedures. Psychologists and at least one doctor designed or recommended coercive interrogation methods including sleep deprivation, stress positions, isolation and waterboarding. The military’s Behavioral Science Consultation Teams evaluated detainees, consulted their medical records to ascertain vulnerabilities and advised interrogators when to push harder for intelligence information. Psychologists designed a program for new arrivals at Guantánamo that kept them in isolation to “enhance and exploit” their “disorientation and disorganization.” Medical officials monitored interrogations and ordered medical interventions so they could continue even when the detainee was in obvious distress. In one case, an interrogation log obtained by Time magazine shows, a medical corpsman ordered intravenous fluids to be administered to a dehydrated detainee even as loud music was played to deprive him of sleep. ..."

Supreme Court gun case could imperil basis of state laws [03/02/10] "The US Supreme Court will hear arguments Tuesday in a case that could affect the ability of states and cities to pass gun bans, and, more broadly, could shift the balance of power between the states and Washington. If the Supreme Court rules in favor of a challenge to Chicago's ban on handguns, it could lead to a slew of challenges against state laws on everything, not just guns. The Supreme Court will rule on McDonald v. City of Chicago, a case in which a Chicago resident has challenged that city's handgun ban as unconstitutional. But the case goes much further than the typical bickering over the Second Amendment. That's because it has more to do with the 14th Amendment than it does with the Second. In 2008, the Supreme Court struck down the District of Columbia's law restricting handgun possession, on the grounds it violated the Second Amendment. But that didn't settle the issue because, as Laura E. Davis reports at Yahoo News, Washington, DC, is federal territory. And the Supreme Court has long maintained that the Second Amendment doesn't apply the same way to state laws as it does to federal laws. ... But the challenge to Chicago's handgun ban isn't about the Second Amendment; it's about the 14th Amendment, which states that "no state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States."
So if the Supreme Court rules Chicago's handgun ban unconstitutional -- which many observers say is likely, given the court's conservative leanings in recent years -- it would likely be on the grounds that the law "abridged the privileges or immunities" of a US citizen. The result, Davis argues at Yahoo News, could be a slew of challenges to state laws -- any state law that a challenger believes "abridges" his or her "privileges or immunities." The potential implications of this case are huge – and not just for gun rights. If the privileges-or-immunities argument prevails, it would bring back a constitutional argument that has been effectively dead since 1873, when a decision (known as the Slaughter-House cases) said that the clause only protects rights of national citizenship. But if the court reinterprets this clause, the wording is so broad that some think it could bring a flood of challenges to numerous other laws. Others fear a privileges-or-immunities revival will lead to too much judicial subjectivity. Davis notes that, if the court does rule to strike down Chicago's handgun ban, "it will almost certainly have to contradict its rulings in earlier cases ..."Related: Gun case presents quandary for Supreme Court justices
Cable News Channels Continues To Reveal Corporate Ties Of Guests [03/01/10] "Since 2007, at least 75 registered lobbyists, public relations representatives and corporate officials have appeared on cable news broadcasts “with no disclosure of the corporate interests that paid them,” according to a report in the March 1 issue of The Nation magazine. Many of these people are “paid by companies and trade groups to manage their public image and promote their financial and political interests,” writes the magazine’s Sebastian Jones, a freelance reporter after a four-month-long probe. “Many have been regulars on more than one of the cable networks, turning in dozens—and in some cases hundreds—of appearances,” Jones reports. For example, Tom Ridge, identified as the former governor of Pennsylvania, appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball With Chris Matthews urging the White House to “create nuclear power plants.” What viewers were not told, though, is that Ridge since 2005 has pocketed $530,659 in executive compensation for serving on the board of Exelon, the nation’s biggest nuclear power company, Jones writes. On the same day, last Dec. 4th, retired general Barry McCaffrey, told MSNBC viewers the war in Afghanistan would require a three-to-10-year effort and “a lot of money.” Unmentioned, Jones says, was the fact DynCorp paid McCaffrey $182,309 in 2009 alone and that DynCorp has a five-year, $5.9 billion deal to aid U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Jones describes MSNBC as “the cable network with the most egregious instances of airing guests with conflicts of interest.” He notes, “Only on MSNBC was a prime-time program, Countdown, hosted by public relations operative Richard Wolffe and later by a pharmaceutical company consultant, former Governor Howard Dean, with no mention of the outside work either man was engaged in. And MSNBC has yet to introduce DynCorp’s Barry McCaffrey as anything but a ‘military analyst.’” ......"

Louisiana Sheriff launches " Operation Exodus," a policing plan for an end-of-the-world scenario [03/01/10] ""The Bossier Parish sheriff's office is launching a program called "Operation Exodus," a policing plan for an end-of-the-world scenario involving a mostly white group of ex-police volunteers and a .50-caliber machine gun, inspired in part from the Book of Exodus . "The buck stops with Larry Deen," said Bossier Parish Sheriff Larry Deen. "The liability stops with Larry Deen. I am the chief law enforcement officer in this parish, and it is incumbent upon me protect all of the people in it." Deen said he had been formulating a plan to protect Bossier Parish's vital resources, like food and gasoline, in the event of a catastrophic event, such as war or a terrorist attack. Deen said he had been thinking of the plan since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Local residents may remember then-President George W. Bush's address to the nation was made out of Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City immediately after the attacks. At that time, Deen's men and about 100 other patrol cars barricaded entry to the base to protect the president from what turned out to be the nonexistent threat of an assault on the base."

Will the UK protect its own citizens as much as it protects Israel? [03/01/10] "... Israel's policy of overseas assassination raises profound issues that threaten the basis of the modern state: sovereignty, rule of law and national and personal security. Israel has a publicly-stated policy of violating the sovereignty of any and all countries in order to kill or abduct its opponents. In both proclamation and actual practice, Israeli law, decrees and actions abroad supersede the laws and law enforcement agencies of any other nation. If Israel's policy becomes the common practice world-wide, we would enter a savage Hobbesian jungle in which individuals would be subject to the murderous intent of foreign assassination squads unrestrained by any law or accountable national authority. Each and every state could impose its own laws and cross national borders in order to murder other nation's citizens or residents with impunity. Israel's extra-territorial assassinations make a mockery of the very notion of national sovereignty. Extra-territorial secret police elimination of opponents was a common practice of the Nazi Gestapo, Stalin's GPU and Pinochet's DINA and has now become the sanctioned practice of the US "Special Forces" and the CIA clandestine division. Such policies are the hallmark of totalitarian, dictatorial and imperialist states, which systematically trample on the sovereign rights of peoples. Israel's practice of extra-judicial, extra- territorial assassinations, exemplified by the recent murder of Mahmoud al Mabhouh in a Dubai hotel room, violates all the fundamental precepts of the rule of law. Extra-judicial killings ordered by a state, mean its own secret police are judge, jury, prosecutor and executioner, unrestrained by sovereignty, law and the duty of nations to protect their citizens and visitors. Evidence, legal procedures, defense and cross examinations are obliterated in the process. State-sponsored, extra-judicial murder completely undermines due process. Liquidation of opponents abroad is the logical next step after Israel's domestic show trials, based on the application of its racial laws and administrative detention decrees, which have dispossessed the Palestinian people and violated international laws. ..."

CIA inspector general was ‘bothered’ by ‘excessive’ waterboarding [03/01/10] "Last August, in response to an ACLU lawsuit, the Obama administration released a partially declassified 2004 report from the CIA's Inspector General on that agency's detention and interrogation programs. The report's descriptions of the treatment of detainees were sufficiently shocking to prompt Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a prosecutor to look into allegations of abuse. ... Now additional documents, newly obtained by Judicial Watch under a FOIA request, make clear the depth of Inspector General John Helgerson's own concerns about the allegations in his 2004 report. The documents include timeslines and redacted descriptions of CIA briefings of members of Congress -- primarily the chairs and ranking members of the House and Senate intelligence oversight committees -- regarding the treatment of detainees and the use of enhanced interrogation techniques ..."

A Turning Point in Europe [03/01/10] "... Wednesday’s general strike in Greece, involving 2 million workers in the public and private sectors, marks a turning point in the political situation throughout Europe. It represents the most significant manifestation of a growing movement of resistance to the attempt by Europe’s governments and corporations to make workers pay for the economic crisis and the multi-billion-euro bailout of the banks. ...This week saw a succession of strikes and protests throughout Europe ... On Monday, Lufthansa’s 4,500 pilots in Germany struck. In France, air traffic controllers struck alongside workers at six French oil refineries. British Airways cabin crew voted by over 80 percent to strike. On Tuesday, protest rallies took place in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia against the austerity measures of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) government of Jose Zapatero. Trade unions in the Czech Republic announced that public transport would be halted next week. A one-day general strike of the public sector is planned for March 4 in Portugal over the extension of a wage freeze as part of measures to cut the deficit from 9.3 percent of gross domestic product to 3 percent by 2013. French pilots have also announced plans to strike later this week. These strikes and protests are only the initial response by Europe’s workers to the offensive being waged against them. The broadest mobilizations have been in those countries where the most savage cuts have been announced. Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain—the so-called “PIGS”—have been targeted by the banks and financial speculators and ordered by the European Union to drastically slash their budget deficits. This will set a precedent for similar cuts across Europe. But the fact that industrial unrest has spread to Germany, France and the UK indicates the potential development of a truly pan-European movement. The same underlying tendencies that have given rise to the reemergence of the class struggle in Europe exist in North and South America, Asia and Africa .... The basis for a continent-wide social and political movement is rooted in the common problems faced by workers in a globalised economy dominated by huge international banks and corporations. These organizations, and the financial oligarchy they represent, are demanding unprecedented cuts in social programmes, wages and pensions in order to pay for the trillions of dollars handed over by European governments to the banks. They are speculating against any economy that is seen as debt-heavy and unwilling to carry forward the necessary attacks on the working class, thereby increasing the financial pressure on the targeted governments...."
