The Baby Boomers are being targeted because of the rampant drug use in the '80s with needles, as well as blood transfusions that were in great use during the '90s; before blood screening was common place. Commentary: "New Study Proves Low Doses of Radiation Are Very Harmful" [05/19/12] [15:55] " ... a formal dose-threshold analysis indicated no threshold; i.e., zero dose was the best estimate of the threshold. The risk of cancer mortality increased significantly for most major sites, including stomach, lung, liver, colon, breast, gallbladder, esophagus, bladder and ovary, whereas rectum, pancreas, uterus, prostate and kidney parenchyma did not have significantly increased risks [...]" 

Commentary: "Airport Scanners: Report Shows How Tetra-Hertz Radiation Can Destroy DNA" [05/19/12] "A recent study conducted using THz radiation found that the radiation’s effects on genetic material are so devastating that they can actually destroy it. THz radiation effectively unzips the double helix strands, creating anomalies that would be detrimental to gene expression and replication. The report concludes by saying that TSA scanners are not only a gross invasion of privacy, but are also producing long term effects on human health that ultimately shorten the lifespan of those who are unfortunate enough to be affected by them. Commentary: "Italian Court Rules MMR Vaccine Did Trigger Autism" [05/17/12] "In what may be a ground-breaking decision, the Italian Court of Rimini has ruled that causation between an MMR vaccine and the resulting autism in a young child “has been established.” The unnamed child received the vaccine in March of 2004 and on returning home immediately developed adverse symptoms. During the next year the child regressed, receiving the autism diagnosis one year later and is now 100% disabled by the disease. The Italian court ruled that the child “has been damaged by irreversible complications due to vaccination (prophylaxis trivalent MMR)” and ordered the Ministry of Health to compensate the child with a 15 year annuity and to reimburse the parents of their court cost. The case is expected to go to appeal as authorities are concerned it may set a legal precedent. [...] This, however, is the second recent judgment to come to this conclusion. Earlier this year a US court also ruled that the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine can cause autism. In a ruling that kept very quiet in the press, the US Court of Federal Claims has conceded that the mercury-based preservative thimerosal, which was in vaccines until 2002, caused autism in the case of one child. The ruling was just one of 4,900 cases currently being considered for compensation payments. Health officials are concerned that it could open the floodgates for even more claims. The ruling, made by US Assistant Attorney General Peter Keisler, was made last November, and was one of three test cases into the MMR-autism link that was being considered by a three-member panel, which Keisler chaired. The case involved a child who received nine vaccinations in July 2000, when she was 18 months old. Two of these contained thimerosal. Within days, the girl, who had previously been healthy, began to exhibit loss of language skills, no eye contact, loss of response to verbal direction, insomnia, incessant screaming, and arching. A diagnosis of autism was confirmed seven months later. [...]"

Commentary: "Treatable Infections Cause 1 In 6 Cancers" [05/13/12] "A sixth of all cancers worldwide are the result of potentially treatable or preventable infections caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites, according to a new study. Researchers found that that almost 2 million new cancer cases in 2008 were caused by the human papilloma virus, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and the stomach bacterium Helicobacter pylori, and that the proportion of cancers caused by infection was three times higher in developing countries, reports the Guardian. A fifth of the 7.5 million cancer deaths worldwide in 2008 were caused by infection-related cancers, the study found. The research shows that vaccines for HPV and hepatitis B should be a priority for health care systems, notes an editorial accompanying the Lancet study. The HPV vaccination program is gaining momentum, but only very slowly, because "it’s hard to get teenagers in for all three doses," and "because HPV is sexually transmitted, it’s evoked a whole bunch of hullaballoo over whether the vaccine promotes promiscuity," the chair of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center tells ABC. Greater progress has been made with the hepatitis B vaccination program, he says, so the occurrence of liver cancer should be "dropping precipitously" over the next 20 years. [...]"  

Commentary: "Human Hormones Are Being Eclipsed By Synthetic Chemicals" [05/11/12] "A new study published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology has raised some disturbing possibilities regarding the dangers of common hormone-mimicking preservatives found in thousands of consumer products on the market today. Titled "Parabens detection in different zones of the human breast: consideration of source and implications of findings," researchers discussed the role that parabens -- a class of estrogen-mimicking chemicals widely used in drugs, foods and cosmetics -- may have in breast cancer and childhood disease... The report focused on the findings of The Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Centre at the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust published last month (March, 2012), which discovered five paraben esters in human breast tissue samples collected from 40 mastectomies from women with primary breast cancer.[2] The report revealed three things: 1) The ester form of parabens found within the breast tissue samples indicated a dermal route of exposure, as would occur through skin care products and underarm deodorants. 2) The paraben residues were found at concentrations up to 1 million times higher than the estrogen (estradiol) levels naturally found in human breast tissue. 3) Propylparaben was found in the highest concentration in the underarm area (axilla), where underarm deodorants are most used and breast cancer prevalence is at its highest. [...]"  

Commentary: "Psychopaths Have Different Brains To Normal People - And Current 'Therapies' For Killers May Be Useless" [05/09/12] "Psychopaths have physically different brains from 'normal' people - and may be 'born to kill'. In scans by scientists, they had less grey matter in the areas of the brain important for understanding other peoples' emotions. Psychopathy - a disorder suffered by many (but not all) violent criminals - is characterised by an inability to 'empathise'. Now it seems it might be caused by a structural abnormality in the brain. The new finding may mean that there is simply no point treating psychopaths with current 'behavioural' treatments. The researchers, based at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, said the differences in psychopaths' brains mark them out even from other violent criminals with anti-social personality disorders (ASPD), and from healthy non-offenders.  Nigel Blackwood, who led the study, said the ability to use brain scans to identify and diagnose this sub-group of violent criminals has important implications for treatment.  Study results showed that the psychopaths' brains had significantly less grey matter in the anterior rostral prefrontal cortex and temporal poles than the brains of the non-psychopathic offenders and non-offenders. These areas of the brain are important for understanding other people's emotions and intentions, and are activated when people think about moral behaviour, the researchers said. Damage to these areas is linked with a lack of empathy, a poor response to fear and distress and a lack of self-conscious emotions such as guilt or embarrassment. [...]"  

Commentary: "Ritalin Use Soars Fourfold In U.K: Psychologists Warn Of Untested Drug Cocktails" [05/06/12] "Prescriptions of Ritalin for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have quadrupled in a decade, prompting fears it is being pushed on children at the expense of alternative treatments and without appreciation of long-term effects. Figures released by the NHS business services authority to the Liberal Democrat MP Tessa Munt reveal the number of prescriptions of methylphenidate hydrochloride, the generic name for Ritalin, rose in England from 158,000 in 1999 to 661,463 in 2010. Ritalin is a psychostimulant drug most commonly approved for treatment of ADHD in children. It is also used to treat conditions such as narcolepsy and in certain cases may also be prescribed for lethargy, depression and obesity. The Association of Educational Psychologists said its members were reporting an increase in children with behavioural difficulties being prescribed the drug in conjunction with antidepressants, despite the fact there was “little to no evidence about the effect which these cocktails of drugs are having on the development of children’s brains”. The association claims clinical studies show the “beneficial effects of psychostimulant medication are not sustained over the long term, necessitating stronger and stronger dosages to be prescribed over time” and that it is “becoming a common practice for children to be prescribed stronger dosages than recommended in the morning as a ‘top-up’ or ‘kickstart’ dose so that medication lasts the full school day”. Commentary: "Garlic ‘Prevents Food Poisoning Bacteria Better Than Antibiotics" [05/03/12] "Have you got food poisoning? Forget asking your GP for antibiotics, as scientists reckon garlic is not only great at fighting vampires – it also beats food poisoning. Researchers from the Washington State University discovered that garlic is 100 times more effective than two commonly used antibiotics when it comes to treating poisoning caused by the most common source of bacterium: campylobacter. The study discovered the garlic compound 'diallyl sulfide' was able to penetrate through the bacterium’s slimy biofilm layer and kill the cell by shutting down its growth and metabolism. However, antibiotics erythromycin and ciprofloxacin did not have the same ability. "This work is very exciting to me because it shows that this compound has the potential to reduce disease-causing bacteria in the environment and in our food supply," said lead author Dr Xiaonan Lu, in a statement. Adding to this, Michael Konkel, a co-author who has been studying this particular type of food poisoning for 25 years, said: "This is the first step in developing or thinking about new intervention strategies.” The study results were published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. Commentary: "Silent War Within the Brains of U.S. Soldiers" [05/02/12] "While many "patriotic" Americans feel good about cheering on their soldiers to enter any and every battlefield that politicians and elites convince them is necessary, there already have been signs that the stress of such long-term battle is taking a horrible mental toll. There is an equally troubling discussion by the military about how best to cover up the consequences of the trauma endured. We have read about the testing of neuroscience applications that can erase traumatic memories with just the pop of a pill. However, it is the more common pharmaceutical prescription drugs that are increasingly widespread. As discussed in the video below, there are now 110,000 troops on amphetamines, antidepressants, and sedatives among other prescribed medications, which is leading to higher rates of suicide, and poor judgement resulting in the deaths of friends and foes alike. Most soldiers and their families wouldn't imagine that the sanctioned scrambling of brains by psychoactive drugs would be part of the risk. But, then again, the U.S. government has a history of experimentation and neglect of soldiers and their families even as they head back to civilian life. As America descends into full-blown Martial Law, many of these drug-addled brains are landing in America, thereby creating a scenario that is all but guaranteed to become violently obvious even to those who have chosen to ignore this mounting problem. MSM: "Prostate Cancer Shocker: Surgery Does Nothing To "Prolong Life" [04/30/12] "Cancer experts are nervously awaiting the publication of a new study that may revolutionize the treatment of prostate cancer, the Independent reports. First revealed at a urology conference in February, the 12-year study of 731 men showed that standard prostate cancer surgery did nothing to prolong life. "The only rational response to these results is, when presented with a patient with prostate cancer, to do nothing," says a British specialist. In fact, prostate cancer is so slow-growing that in 50% of British cases, men end up dying of something else. Some specialists question whether it should even be labeled a "cancer" at all. Others are casting doubt on the new study, saying it focused on older, particularly low-risk men, who would never have had surgery in the UK anyway. "We would offer milder treatment such as radiotherapy or watchful waiting," says a British urologist. "We are better than the US in putting men on surveillance." Commentary: "Vitamin D Supplements 'Could Cut Blood Pressure As Effectively As Some Drugs: Study" [04/28/12]   "Taking vitamin D supplements could cut blood pressure by as much as some drugs, claim researchers. A new study shows supplements lowered blood pressure in patients diagnosed with hypertension - high blood pressure - compared with those taking ‘dummy’ pills. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked with high blood pressure, but until now there has been little scientific evidence that topping up levels of the vitamin in the blood makes a difference. A new study, presented at the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) meeting in London, shows direct benefits from taking supplements for five months in winter. Sun exposure tops up natural levels more effectively than through diet, but northern European countries like the UK only get adequate levels of UV light for seven months a year. Around 90 per cent of the body’s supply of vitamin D comes from the action of sunlight on the skin. Altogether 112 patients taking part had their initial levels of vitamin D measured, and then they were given either Vitamin D or a placebo (dummy pill) for 20 weeks. 92 of the 112 patients were found to have low levels of vitamin D at the start of the study. The researchers found that those patients taking the vitamin D supplement of 75 mcg (correct) daily showed a significant reduction in central systolic blood pressure, blood pressure measured near the heart. MSM: "Infant Monkeys Given Standard Doses of Vaccines Develop Autism Symptoms" [04/28/12] "Infant Vaccines Produce Autism Symptoms in New Primate Study by University Of Pittsburgh Scientists / Routine Safety Study That Government Scientists Refused to Do Illustrates Vaccine Program and Mercury Health Risks [...] Atlanta, GA: Findings released today showed that infant monkeys given vaccines officially recommended by the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) exhibited autism-like symptoms. Lead investigator Laura Hewitson of the University of Pittsburgh and colleagues presented study results at the International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR) in London. Safety studies of medicines are typically conducted in monkeys prior to use in humans, yet such basic research on the current childhood vaccination regimen has never before been done. The abstracts presented at IMFAR, the world’s top autism science conference, describe biological changes and altered behavior in vaccinated macaques that are similar to those observed in children with autism. Unvaccinated animals showed no such adverse outcomes. The vaccines given were those recommended for U.S. infants in the 1990s, including several with the mercury preservative thimerosal and the Measles-Mumps-Rubella vaccine. Rates of autism spectrum disorder among children born in the 1990s surged dramatically, from about 1 in 5,000 to 1 in 150 children. “This research underscores the critical need for more investigation into immunizations, mercury, and the alterations seen in autistic children,” stated Lyn Redwood, director of SafeMinds. “SafeMinds calls for large scale, unbiased studies that look at autism medical conditions and the effects of vaccines given as a regimen.” The group’s request for research echoes that of Dr. Bernadine Healy, Former NIH Director, in a CBS interview earlier this week. She asserted that public health officials have been too quick to dismiss an autism-vaccine connection when the research has been insufficient. The government recently conceded a federal vaccine court case which agreed that a child regressed into autism as a result of 9 vaccines given on one day. “The full implications of this primate study await publication of the research in a scientific journal,” noted Theresa Wrangham, president of SafeMinds. “But we can say that it demonstrates how the CDC evaded their responsibility to investigate vaccine safety questions. Vaccine safety oversight should be removed from the CDC and given to an independent agency.”"  

MSM: "Agent Orange Corn' Debate Rages As Dow Seeks Approval Of New Genetically Modified Seed" [04/27/12] "A new kind of genetically modified crop under the brand name of "Enlist" -- known by its critics as "Agent Orange corn" -- has opponents pushing U.S. regulators to scrutinize the product more closely and reject an application by Dow AgroSciences to roll out its herbicide-resistant seeds. The corn has been genetically engineered to be immune to 2,4-D, an ingredient used in Agent Orange that some say could pose a serious threat to the environment and to human health. Approval by the United States Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Agency would allow farmers to spray it far and wide without damaging their crops, boosting productivity for the agribusiness giant. Dow and its allies have insisted that their product is well tested, while industry regulators have so far overlooked critics' concerns. "This is going to be a solution that we are looking forward to bringing to farmers," Dow's Joe Vertin told Reuters. More than 140 advocacy groups have participated in a letter writing campaign calling on U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to reject Dow's regulatory application for the herbicide and herbicide-resistant crops, submitting more than 365,000 missives ahead of a public comment period that ends April 27. "The scientific community has sounded alarms about the dangers of 2,4-D for decades," wrote opponents in their letter to Vilsack. "Numerous studies link 2,4-D exposure to major health problems such as cancer, lowered sperm counts, liver toxicity and Parkinson's disease. Lab studies show that 2,4-D causes endocrine disruption, reproductive problems, neurotoxicity, and immunosuppression." Some farmers have argued that the new herbicide, a combination of 2,4-D and glyphosate -- the active ingredient in Monsanto's bestselling Roundup weed killer -- is necessary to combat weeds that have become resistant to glyphosate alone. Glyphosate has also come under considerable public scrutiny in the wake of scientific findings that demonstrate the chemical causes birth defects in the embryos of laboratory animals. Health professionals contend that 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), an ingredient in the Vietnam War-era defoliant that's been blamed for public health problems both during and after the war, poses its own risks. Absurdities: "Australian Doctors Still Administering Banned 'Flu Vaccine' To Children" [04/23/12] "Two years to the day after CSL’s Fluvax was banned for use in children under the age of 5, news has emerged that Australian doctors are continuing to administer this shot to infants and toddlers despite the fact that there are four other vaccines that are licensed for use in this age group. Originally, it was discovered that the rate of febrile convulsions following Fluvax was 10 times higher than the ‘expected’ rate and was causing seizures in 1 child in 100. As a result, the Chief Medical Officer of Australia, Jim Bishop, banned the vaccine for use in children under five and current recommendations state that it should only be used in children between five and 10 years of age if no other vaccination is available. Initial reports have now found that 25 children in Western Australia (WA) were given the Fluvax in error so far this year, but follow-up investigations stated that errors in data entry were responsible for an over-reporting when in fact, ‘only’ seven children had gotten this shot. The report states that Fluvax has been given to children across Australia but it is hard to know how many babies have been improperly vaccinated since at least 70 percent of the entries by doctors have been found to be incorrect. As if it weren’t bad enough to be administering a vaccine to babies that has already caused permanent disabilities and death, it appears that the vaccines being administered may also be out of date. Dr Terry Nolan of ATAGI, quoted on the ABC Program, the World Today, says that Fluvax Jr is no longer available and any stock that is still around would be out of date. So either doctors are administering out-of-date shots or they are giving children adult vaccines which are twice the potency. Either way, it’s a very bad situation. How did doctors make such stupid mistakes? This begs the question – how is it possible that doctors can make errors 70 percent of the time when reporting this vital information to the government? Also, if they make such a large number of errors when there is already increased scrutiny due to the risks of the flu vaccine for this age group, how many other mistakes are occurring that we are as yet unaware of? [...]"  

Absurdities: "Female Genital Mutilation 'Offered By UK Medics'" [04/23/12] "GP, dentist and alternative medicine practitioner are filmed allegedly offering to carry out or arrange FGM. As many as 100,000 women in Britain have undergone female genital mutilations (FGM) with medics in the UK offering to carry out the illegal procedure on girls as young as 10, it has been reported. Investigators from the Sunday Times said they had secretly filmed a doctor, dentist and alternative medicine practitioner who were allegedly willing to perform FGM or arrange for the operation to be carried out. The doctor and dentist deny any wrongdoing. The practice, which involves the surgical removal of external genitalia and in some cases the stitching of the vaginal opening, is illegal in Britain and carries up to a 14-year prison sentence. It is also against the law to arrange FGM. The procedure is widespread across parts of Africa. Victims are rarely given anaesthetic and frequently suffer long-term damage and pain. Research suggests that every year more than 22,000 girls in the UK and up to 6,000 in London are at risk of the potentially fatal procedure. The combination of unfettered corporate greed, a eugenics agenda and corrupt political manipulation forms an unholy trinity that could make Monsanto the real Cyberdyne Systems. Owning a major organization that focuses heavily on the bee collapse and is recognized by the USDA for their mission statement of “restoring bee health and protecting the future of insect pollination” could be very advantageous for Monsanto. Commentary: "Paralysis Cases Spike in Wake of Bill Gates’ Polio Vaccination Effort in India" [04/19/12] "Expert medical pediatricians in India have criticized the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for their illusory promise of polio eradication without noting the devastating side effects its vaccination regiment could inflict. Numerous problems have surfaced from what Dr. Neetu Vashisht and Dr. Jacob Puliyel of the Department of Paediatrics at St Stephens Hospital in Delhi have termed an “unethical” advocacy that spanned more than a decade. That vaccination program, funded only through an initial series of grants, has saddled the Indian government with health program costs and exposed the public to new risk factors. As these doctors point out in their criticism, polio while seemingly disappearing, could easily see a sudden return in weaponized form. Since its lab synthesis in 2002, its resurrection is deemed probable and perhaps imminent, rendering the disease, thus, impossible to permanently eradicate and immunization efforts ineffective and costly. But the real story is that while polio has statistically disappeared from India, there has been a huge spike in cases of non-polio acute flaccid paralysis (NPAFP)– the very types of crippling problems it was hoped would disappear with polio but which have instead flourished from a new cause. There were 47,500 cases of non-polio paralysis reported in 2011, the same year India was declared “polio-free,” according to Dr. Vashisht and Dr. Puliyel. Further, the available data shows that the incidents tracked back to areas were doses of the polio vaccine were frequently administered. The national rate of NPAFP in India is 25-35 times the international average. So did polio vaccines trigger these new cases of paralysis? Related studies in India have already demonstrated that polio vaccines are the leading cause of polio paralysis. Yet the 100-180 cases of paralysis per year in India admittedly linked directly to receiving the polio-vaccine, the recognized development of vaccine-associated polio paralysis (VAPP), pales in comparison to the 47,500 cases of non-polio paralysis. Further, polio vaccines have been widely blamed for deaths and damages in the neighboring country Pakistan. A government inquiry there confirmed the effects of the polio vaccine, funded under a GAVI program. Its investigation revealed that the GAVI alliance was recommending untested vaccines, and asked that all GAVI-recommended vaccines be suspended until testing showed their safety and efficacy. Commentary: "Researchers Hid, Ignored Bad Results in Massive Drug Trial Corruption" [04/18/12] "Pharmaceutical medication has always been very highly regarded in society, and its continued use shows that many individuals seem to use it without knowing — or more likely, even thinking — about the content of the drugs that they so hastily consume. The FDA’s only reasoning for seizure of the products is that they do not have properly labeled information, something that they are far too concerned with rather than for the health of the American people. The state of Arkansas sued J&J and its subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals over its marketing of the drug in 2007. A number of US states have already found the firms guilty of similar charges and fined them accordingly. Janssen said it was "disappointed" with the judge's decision. The company added that if its motion for a retrial was denied, it would appeal the fine. "During the nearly three-week trial, Janssen presented abundant evidence showing the company acted responsibly and fully complied with all laws and regulations regarding Risperdal," it said in a written statement. Commentary: "Ammonium Hydroxide, Health Effects Of "Pink Slime" [04/12/12] " Commonly sold as window cleaner, floor cleaner, wood polish, and a source of food (slime), ammonium hydroxide is a serious threat to a person's health. The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for ammonium hydroxide classifies the substance as very hazardous when in contact with skin. Ammonium hydroxide may produce tissue damage on mucous membranes. The human digestive system is basically one long mucous membrane from mouth to finish. Repeated or prolonged exposure to ammonium hydroxide can lead to health deterioration through accumulation within human organs. Although ammonium and ammonia are essential to proper kidney function and maintaining an acid-base balance within the body, chronic high levels of the chemical can ruin delicate blood vessels and cause harm on the cellular level. MSM: "Dental X-Rays Linked To Common Brain Tumor, Study Finds" [04/11/12] "Dental X-rays may help dentists collect essential information about oral health, but a new study is raising questions about their safety. The new research links regular dental imaging to one of the most common types of brain tumors and suggests adults who were regularly exposed to X-rays in the past, before dosages were lowered, might have an especially pronounced risk. For the new study, scheduled to be published online on Tuesday in the the American Cancer Society's journal Cancer, researchers examined data from more than 1,400 patients who had been diagnosed with meningioma: This is a type of tumor that grows in membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord and generally is noncancerous, but can lead to headaches, vision and memory problems and loss of speech and motor control. The researchers compared those individuals to more than 1,300 adults who were tumor-free. Adults who developed brain tumors were more than twice as likely to say that they had bitewing X-rays yearly, if not more frequently, according to the findings. Bitewing X-rays, which require patients to bite down on an X-ray film holder, show the crowns of the upper and lower teeth at the same time. The researchers also found a link between the tumors and panorex dental exams, which use an X-ray outside the mouth to take a broad image of a patient's full mouth and are often used to look at problems such as infections and fractures. The increased risk of meningioma was particularly pronounced among individuals who were younger than 10 when they received the exam. Dr. John B. Ludlow, a professor of oral and maxillofacial radiology at the University of North Carolina who was not associated with the study, said that it revealed a statistical association between a history of dental X-rays and meningiomas that he called "thought provoking, if not sobering." He cautioned, however, that dental techniques have changed over the years. "Given the relatively long time frame between exposure to ionizing radiation and appearance of sold tumor cancers, most of the cases in the [study] received dental x-ray exposures two or more decades prior to the appearance of a tumor," Ludlow stated in an email to The Huffington Post. Commentary: "For Military Troops, Prescription Drugs May Add To Fog Of War" [04/09/12] " U.S. Air Force pilot Patrick Burke's day started in the cockpit of a B-1 bomber near the Persian Gulf and proceeded across nine time zones as he ferried the aircraft home to South Dakota. Every four hours during the 19-hour flight, Burke swallowed a tablet of Dexedrine, the prescribed amphetamine known as "go pills." After landing, he went out for dinner and drinks with a fellow crewman. They were driving back to Ellsworth Air Force Base when Burke began striking his friend in the head. "Jack Bauer told me this was going to happen — you guys are trying to kidnap me!" he yelled, as if he were a character in the TV show "24."  When the woman giving them a lift pulled the car over, Burke leaped on her and wrestled her to the ground. "Me and my platoon are looking for terrorists," he told her before grabbing her keys, driving away and crashing into a guardrail. Burke was charged with auto theft, drunk driving and two counts of assault. But in October, a court-martial judge found the young lieutenant not guilty "by reason of lack of mental responsibility" — the almost unprecedented equivalent, at least in modern-day military courts, of an insanity acquittal. Four military psychiatrists concluded that Burke suffered from "polysubstance-induced delirium" brought on by alcohol, lack of sleep and the 40 milligrams of Dexedrine he was issued by the Air Force. Baughman writes: “…all in their twenties…no signs of suicide or of a multi-drug ‘overdose’…as claimed by the Inspector General of the VA…All were on the same prescribed drug cocktail, Seroquel (antipsychotic), Paxil (antidepressant) and Klonopin (benzodiazepine).” Baughman calls on the Surgeon General to embargo the use of all anti-psychotics and antidepressants in the military. Baughman’s initial inquiry suggests as many as 247 soldiers have died from cardiac arrest after ingesting these drugs. He finds the US military has spent, in the last decade, $1.5 billion on antipsychotic drugs, despite the fact that these meds have never been approved for PTSD or sleep disorders. Baughman writes, “From 2001, US Central Command has given deploying troops 180-day supplies of prescribed psychotropic drugs.”This is like making each soldier a self-dosing pharmacy. [...]"

Commentary: "Poland Announces Complete Ban on Monsanto’s Genetically Modified Maize" [04/07/12] "Following the anti-Monsanto activism launched by nations like France and Hungary, Poland has announced that it will launch a complete ban on growing Monsanto’s genetically modified strain MON810. The announcement, made by Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki, sets yet another international standard against Monsanto’s genetically modified creations. In addition to being linked to a plethora health ailments, Sawicki says that the pollen originating from this GM strain may actually be devastating the already dwindling bee population. “The decree is in the works. It introduces a complete ban on the MON810 strain of maize in Poland,” Sawicki stated to the press. Similar opposition to Monsanto occurred on March 9th, when 7 European countries blocked a proposal by the Danish EU presidency which would permit the cultivation of genetically modified plants on the entire continent. It was France, who in February, lead the charge against GMOs by asking the European Commission to suspend authorization to Monsanto’s genetically modified corn. What’s more, the country settled a landmark case in favor of the people over Monsanto, finding the biotech giant guilty of chemical poisoning. In a ruling given by a court in Lyon (southeast France), grain grower Paul Francois stated that Monsanto failed to provide proper warnings on the Lasso weedkiller product label which resulted in neurological problems such as memory loss and headaches. The court ordered an expert opinion to determine the sum of the damages, and to verify the link between Lasso and the reported illnesses. The result was a guilty charge, paving the way for further legal action on behalf of injured farmers. Since 1996, the agricultural branch of the French social security system has gathered about 200 alerts per year regarding sickness related to pesticides. However only 47 cases were even recognized in the past 10 years. Nations are continually taking a stand against Monsanto, with nations like Hungary destroying 1000 acres of GM maize and India slamming Monsanto with ‘biopiracy‘ charges. Despite thousands of emails and calls from constituents who overwhelmingly support mandatory labeling, despite the fact that a majority (6 to 5) of Agriculture Committee members support passage of the measure, Vermont legislators are holding up the labeling bill and refusing to take a vote. Instead, they’re calling for more public hearings on April 12, in the apparent hope that they can run out the clock until the legislative session ends in early May. [...]"

Schernhammer, M.D., Dr.P.H., from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, and her colleagues conducted an extensive investigation into the long-term effects of taking aspirin. They found that prolonged use can trigger cancer development in humans, and that there is no evidence that taking aspirin in any way helps prevent cancer. Based on data gathered as part of the comprehensive Nurses' Health Study, which began in 1980, the team found that, compared to women who consumed fewer than two aspirin tablets per week, regular users taking two or more aspirin tablets a week were a whopping 58 percent more likely to develop pancreatic cancer -- and those taking more than 14 aspirin a week were found to be 86 percent more likely to develop pancreatic cancer. A panel of scientists yesterday reversed its December decision and concluded that two revised papers on the H5N1 virus were good to go. The board created controversy last year when it asked two scientific journals, for the first time, to keep key details under wraps. The decision clears the way for Science and Nature to publish the papers soon, notes AP. Although H5N1 is deadly in humans, it usually cannot be contracted by people. Two research teams modified the flu strain to make it more easily contagious, leading to fears the technique could be used by terrorists. However, the research “did not appear to provide information that would immediately enable misuse of the research in ways that would endanger public health or national security," said the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity. Not everyone is happy with the decision, though. “This work should never have been performed," said one bioweapons expert. [...]"  

MSM: "60 Minutes Asks, 'Is Sugar Toxic?'" [04/01/12] "Crank up the sugar lobby. The sweetener will get the 60 Minutes treatment tonight, with a spate of doctors arguing that it's essentially poison. One UC endocrinologist uses the word "toxic," and thinks the big debate between sugar and high-fructose corn syrup is a waste of breath. "They are basically equivalent," he says, according to CBS. "The problem is they're both bad. They're both equally toxic." He reiterates a call others have made that sugar be regulated like tobacco and alcohol. Americans consume about 130 pounds of "added sugars" a year, much of it in processed foods, according to the 60 Minutes piece, which includes worries that the excess is raising the risk not only of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes, but some forms of cancer as well. A member of the Sugar Association board says the science is "not completely clear" and that it's wrongheaded to single out one food. "The American consuming public is going to omit, eliminate sweeteners out of their diet." [...]"  

MSM: "FDA Says It Will Deny Request To Ban BPA" [04/01/12] "The Food and Drug Administration announced Friday it will deny the National Resources Defense Council’s petition asking it to prohibit the use of bisphenol A, commonly known as BPA, in products manufactured in the United States. However, the federal agency stressed the announcement is not a final safety determination and it continues to support research examining the safety of BPA. In 2008, the council submitted a petition asking the FDA to regulate the use of BPA in human food and food packaging. The FDA had been silent since the petition was filed more than 41 months ago. The council finally, last December, sued the administration to get some form of action. Friday’s announcement is a response to that suit. BPA is a chemical used in many consumer products, including clear and hard plastics called polycarbonate used in water and soda bottles, as well as in the resin linings of food and beverage cans and containers of infant formula. The Natural Resources Defense Council responded by saying it believes the FDA “made the wrong call.” “BPA is a toxic chemical that has no place in our food supply,” said a statement from Dr. Sarah Janssen, a senior scientist in the council’s public health program. “The agency has failed to protect our health and safety in the face of scientific studies that continue to raise disturbing questions about the long-term effects of BPA exposures, especially in fetuses, babies and young children,” the statement said. “The FDA is out of step with scientific and medical research. This illustrates the need for a major overhaul of how the government protects us against dangerous chemicals.” The Natural Resources Defense Council says the FDA’s approval of BPA for use in packaging food “results in human exposure” to the chemical and is “dangerous to those who use the products.” It says studies have linked BPA exposure to a number of dangerous side effects, including defects in newborns, harm to the central nervous system, increased rates of prostate and breast cancer, and metabolic changes in the body that lead to obesity and insulin resistance, which are the main causes of diabetes. Commentary: "FDA Deletes 1 Million Signatures For GMO Labeling Campaign" [04/01/12] "While the Food and Drug Administration has seemingly reached the limit for unbelievable behavior, the company’s decisions continue to astound and appall consumers and health activists alike. In the agency’s latest decision, undoubtedly amazing thousands of individuals yet again, the FDA virtually erased 1 million signatures and comments on the ‘Just Label It’ campaign calling for the labeling of genetically modified foods. The ‘Just Label It” campaign has gotten more signatures than any campaign in history for the labeling of genetically modified foods. Since October of 2011, the campaign has received over 900,000 signatures, with 55 politicians joining in on the movement. So what’s the problem here? Evidently, the FDA counts the amount of signatures not by how many people signed, but how many different individual letters are brought to it. To the FDA, even tens of thousands of signatures presented on a single petition are counted as – you guessed it – a single comment. This is how, despite over a million supporters being gathered by the petition, the FDA concluded a count of only 394. The argument as to whether genetically modified foods are dangerous is a whole discussion on its own, but for the FDA to completely sidestep away from the labeling of GM foods is completely and utterly irresponsible. Consumers have every right to know what they are consuming. Needless to say, biotechnology giant Monsanto is against GMO labeling, claiming that it would mislead consumers since GMOs are ‘perfectly safe’. Of course there is plenty of evidence proving that GMOs are not completely safe, and how they affect life in the long-term is questionable to say the least. [...]"  

Society and Culture:  "Unnecessary Anesthesia Adds $1B To Health Spending" [04/01/12] "Patients increasingly are undergoing unnecessary general anesthesia during gastroenterological procedures, costing the healthcare system as much as $1 billion each year in extra spending, according to a study published yesterday in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The study found that about 14 percent of colonoscopies and endoscopies involved general anesthesia in 2003, whereas 30 percent of the same procedures were accompanied by anesthesia in 2009. But most of those anesthesia services were used by low-risk patients with no heart or breathing problems, leading researchers to allege the anesthesia is a discretionary and unnecessary medical cost, reported MedPage Today. MSM: "Swine Flu Vaccine Linked To Sleep Disorder, Narcolepsy" [03/30/12] "The swine flu vaccine may have been responsible for a sudden increase in cases of narcolepsy among schoolchildren in Finland, a study has found. The sleep disorder is characterised by periods of extreme drowsiness, sudden naps, and paralysis attacks. Scientists spotted a sudden increase in narcolepsy rates among Finnish children early in 2010. Research showed it was associated with the Pandemrix vaccine, given to children to protect them against H1N1 swine flu. One study found that the incidence rate of narcolepsy among children and teenagers under the age of 17 shot up 17-fold after the vaccinations. A further study involving the same researchers, led by Dr Markku Partinen from the Helsinki Sleep Clinic, collected narcolepsy and vaccination data for children born between January 1991 and December 2005. It found that narcolepsy incidence for vaccinated individuals was 13 times higher than for those who were unvaccinated. Both studies appear in the online journal Public Library of Science ONE. The researchers concluded: "We consider it likely that Pandemrix vaccination contributed, perhaps together with other environmental factors, to this increase in genetically susceptible children." The scientists suspect the vaccine may have contributed to an auto-immune effect linked to narcolepsy. [...]" 

Commentary: "Bedrock Of Vaccination Theory Crumbles As Science Reveals Antibodies Not Necessary To Fight Viruses" [03/28/12] "While the medical, pharmaceutical, and vaccine industries are busy pushing new vaccines for practically every condition under the sun, a new study published in the journal Immunity completely deconstructs the entire vaccination theory. Legal Case: "Supreme Court Throws Out Human Gene Patents" [03/27/12] "The Supreme Court on Monday threw out a lower court ruling allowing human genes to be patented, a topic of enormous interest to cancer researchers, patients and drug makers. The court overturned patents belonging to Myriad Genetics Inc. of Salt Lake City on two genes linked to increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Myriad’s BRACAnalysis test looks for mutations on the breast cancer predisposition gene, or BRCA. Those mutations are associated with much greater risks of breast and ovarian cancer. The American Civil Liberties Union has been arguing that genes couldn’t be patented, a position taken by a district court judge but overturned on appeal. The justices’ decision sends the case back down for a continuation of the battle between the scientists who believe that genes carrying the secrets of life should not be exploited for commercial gain and companies that argue that a patent is a reward for years of expensive research that moves science forward. [...]" 

Commentary: "Early Exposure to Germs Has Lasting Benefits" [03/25/12]   "Exposure to germs in childhood is thought to help strengthen the immune system and protect children from developing allergies and asthma, but the pathways by which this occurs have been unclear. Now, researchers have identified a mechanism in mice that may explain the role of exposure to microbes in the development of asthma and ulcerative colitis, a common form of inflammatory bowel disease. In a study published online today in Science1, the researchers show that in mice, exposure to microbes in early life can reduce the body’s inventory of invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells, which help to fight infection but can also turn on the body, causing a range of disorders such as asthma or inflammatory bowel disease. The study supports the ‘hygiene hypothesis’, which contends that such auto-immune diseases are more common in the developed world where the prevalence of antibiotics and antibacterials reduce children’s exposure to microbes. “We as a species are not exposed to the same germs that we were exposed to in the past,” says study co-author Dennis Kasper, a microbiologist at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. The researchers induced two groups of mice — germ-free (GF) mice, which are raised in a sterile environment, and specific-pathogen-free mice raised under normal laboratory conditions — to develop forms of asthma or ulcerative colitis. GF mice had more iNKT cells in their lungs and developed more severe disease symptoms, indicating that exposure to microbes was somehow influencing iNKT cell levels and making the GF mice more susceptible to inflammatory diseases. The study also found that a lack of exposure in early life could not be compensated for by introducing the GF mice to a broader range of microbes in adulthood. [...]" 

Commentary: "Health 'Authorities' Now Admit Severe Side Effects of Vaccines" [03/25/12] "... "The worst nightmare of both the industry and the 'health authorities' is an illness that turns out to be mild, while the vaccine that was supposed to prevent a dangerous epidemic causes a severe side effect that was previously unknown."  [...] On 1 September 2011, the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) admitted, that for Finnish children and youngsters age 4-19, there was a new and obvious connection between Pandemrix and narcolepsy. As stated in THL's press release, "The increased risk associated with vaccination amounted to six cases of narcolepsy per 100,000 persons vaccinated in the 4-19 age group during the eight months following vaccination. This was 12.7 times the risk of a person in the same age group who had not been vaccinated."  This statement was made almost exactly two years after the THL's earlier statement made in the midst of the swine flu hysteria that everyone should be vaccinated with Pandemrix and that it would be safe. In that original statement, the director of the THL emphasized that the squalene adjuvant could increase the side effects of the vaccine to some extent. However, he stated, these side effects would not be dangerous. In Sweden, at least 150 children are now suffering from narcolepsy caused by Pandemrix vaccine. In Finland, the number is approximately 100. In both countries the number is probably growing. Narcolepsy is a disease with lifetime consequences, and the risk that Pandremix may have caused other neurological illnesses has not yet been excluded. Many have already began to compare this tragedy with the thalidomide catastrophe. No European countries had a particularly high rate of deaths due to the swine flue. Germany had the same death rate as Sweden, which was 0.31/100 000, although Sweden vaccinated 60% and Germany only 8%. This implies that the vaccine did little to prevent deaths. The ' responsible authorities' have not yet commented on this matter of fact.  

Commentary: "Judge To FDA: Remove Superbug-Breeding Antibiotics From Animal Feed" [03/24/12] "A federal judge has stepped up to the plate and is now ordering FDA regulators to start proceedings to revoke the approval for the use of common antibiotics in animal feed, stating that the excessive overuse of antibiotics is threatening public health through breeding drug-resistant superbugs. The news could not have come at a more appropriate time, after it was just recently revealed that antibiotic overuse has actually spawned a resistant ‘white plague‘ that threatens the health of individuals worldwide. Thanks to the countless unnecessary prescriptions of antibiotics dished out in nations like India, a heavily drug-resistant form of tuberculosis has scientists concerned over a potential pandemic. United States Magistrate Judge Theodore Katz ordered the FDA to begin with the initiative unless the drug manufacturers can prove that their usage in the food supply is safe. It would be highly unlikely that the drug makers could produce evidence showing that the antibiotic consumption is safe, considering that antibiotics have been linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome, and even skyrocketing mental illness rates. This is in addition to creating massively resistant superbugs that are considered to be impossible to treat by mainstream medicine. Millions of children have been fed the drugs since 2009, while the industry raked in over $12.2 billion in sales in 2011 from the 54+ million prescriptions filled. What’s more, individuals are even being given antipsychotics to treat health problems that aren’t targeted by the drugs. This was the case for Adriane Fugh-Berman, a physician and associate professor of pharmacology at Georgetown University. Fugh-Berman was approached by teenagers wondering if they should be taking a powerful schizophrenia drug to they were previously given to treat insomnia. The occurrence exemplifies the increase in what is known as ‘off label’ use of prescription drugs. Being known as ‘second generation’ or ‘atypical antipsychotics’, the drugs are being handed out by primary care doctors and psychiatrists to treat conditions they are not approved to treat. Instead of giving basic sleep advice or suggesting a route to pinpoint the underlying cause of the insomnia, it seems that the medication prescriber felt suicide-linked antipsychotics were a better solution. The study published Friday in the journal EMBO reports that antibiotics may damage bacteria that live in the gut, disturbing the bacterial community and possibly causing a more severe form of asthma. The study’s lead authors, researchers at the University of British Columbia’s department of microbiology, tested the effects of antibiotics streptomycin and vancomycin on newborn and adult mice. While streptomycin didn’t seem to have a significant effect, the young mice had altered intestinal flora and developed severe cases of asthma when given vancomycin. The older mice appeared to be unaffected. The researchers theorize that infancy and childhood are periods in which humans develop a healthy immune system. If this process is disturbed and healthy bacteria are disturbed in the intestinal tract, the immune system may not work as efficiently, opening the door to diseases like asthma. Allergic asthma is a chronic and inflammatory condition that causes hypersensitivity of the airways, increased production of phlegm, wheezing and breathing problems. It affects an estimated 12 per cent of children and eight per cent of adults in Canada. Experts say such laws have zero chance of passing. Following the lead of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Canadian National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), both of which also recently endorsed Gardasil for boys, the AAP has invented various reasons why boys, who cannot even develop cervical cancer because they do not have cervixes, should get the shot. The drug, used to deworm cattle, pigs and sheep, can rot the skin off noses, ears and cheeks. And over 80 percent of the country's coke supply contains it. "It's probably quite a big problem, and we just don't know yet how big a problem it really is," said Dr. Noah Craft, a dermatologist with Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute. In a case study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Craft describes six cocaine users recently plagued by the dark purple patches of dying flesh. And while they happened to hail from the country's coastlines, the problem is national. "It's important for people to know it's not just in New York and L.A. It's in the cocaine supply of the entire U.S.," Craft said. Craft is one of several doctors across the country who have linked the rotting skin to tainted coke. The gruesome wounds surface days after a hit because of an immune reaction that attacks the blood vessels supplying the skin. Without blood, the skin starves and suffocates.  [...] Eighty-two percent of seized cocaine contains levamisole, according to an April 2011 report by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Why dealers would stretch their stash with levamisole instead of the more traditional fillers, like baking soda, is unclear, although studies in rats suggest the drug acts on the same brain receptors as cocaine. So it might be added to enhance or extend the cocaine’s euphoric effects on the cheap."  Note: Well, it will interesting to see how this plays out.

Legal Case: "Medically Fragile Children Sue Florida" [03/16/12] "Florida's boneheaded attempt to save money by sending medically fragile children to nursing homes instead of providing care at their homes will cost the state more money in the long run, six families say in a federal class action. The families say Florida violated the American Disability Act because it "unlawfully shifted the burden for providing skilled nursing services to the parents or caregivers of children who are not skilled nurses." The defendant state agencies are forcing sick children to go to nursing homes, though "the overall costs to institutionalize all of the plaintiffs and plaintiff class members in nursing facilities is more than the overall costs of providing at home care," according to the complaint. Many of the six medically fragile child plaintiffs "are on tracheotomies, gastrotomy tubes and ventilators," according to the complaint. Citing the Florida Administrative Code, the complaint states: "A Medically Fragile Child is one who is medically complex and whose medical condition is of such a nature that he is technologically dependent, requiring medical apparatus or procedures to sustain life, e.g., requires total parenteral nutrition (TPN), is ventilator dependant, or is dependent on a heightened level of medical supervision to sustain life, and without such services is likely to expire without warning." There are about 250 child Medicaid recipients in Florida nursing facilities, and another 3,300 child Medicaid recipients at risk of being placed in Florida nursing homes, and "defendants have adopted uniform policies, practices, and regulations to reduce private duty nursing services," according to the complaint. [...]" 

Commentary: "Pennsylvania Gagging Doctors Who Want Warn About The Fracking Chemicals In Your Blood" [03/15/12] "Pennsylvania, where the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were signed and where the U.S. coal, oil and nuclear industries began, has adopted what may be the most anti-democratic, anti-environmental law in the country, giving gas companies the right to drill anywhere, overturn local zoning laws, seize private property and muzzle physicians from disclosing specific health impacts from drilling fluids on patients.  The draconian new law, known as Act 13, revises the state’s oil and gas statutes, to allow oil companies to drill for natural gas using the controversial process known as hydraulic fracturing or fracking, where large volumes of water and toxic chemicals are pumped into vertical wells with lateral bores to shatter the rock and release the hydrocarbons. The law strips rights from communities and individuals while imposing new statewide drilling rules. “It’s absolutely crushing of local self-government,” said Ben Price, project director for the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, which has helped a handful of local communities—including the city of Pittsburgh—adopt community rights ordinances that elevate the rights of nature and people to block the drilling. “The state has surrendered over 2,000 municipalities to the industry. It’s a complete capitulation of the rights of the people and their right to self-government. They are handing it over to the industry to let them govern us. It is the corporate state. These doctors have gone through years of training in what is regarded as the western based medicine philosophy, where drugs and surgery are more or less their specialties. In addition to knowing virtually nothing about nutrition, natural solutions, and how to address the root causes of health conditions, many doctors, as well as scientist, have also been shown to be falsifying data in order to have research published. What’s more, many colleagues of the scandalous individuals are urged to keep quiet about what they know. A survey of nearly 2,800 scientists and doctors in the UK has found that 13 percent of them admitted to witnessing the falsification and fabrication of data created by their colleagues. Additionally, 6 percent of the nearly 2,800 individuals surveyed were aware of research misconduct at their own workplace which had never been properly investigated to looked into. Needless to say, there could very well be more scientists or doctors not speaking up, further increasing the scandal rate. [...]"

The outbreak in the Greater Taung Local municipality, Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District has so far caused the death of about 140 chickens – belonging to five farmers – in the Pudimoe village, said spokeswoman Bonolo Mohlakoana in a statement. Additional cases were reported in Leshobo village where more than 25 chickens were reported dead within a week, according to IOL News. Agriculture MEC Boitumelo Tshwene has expressed his concern to the department’s state veterinarians and urged farmers to report any mortality cases immediately. “There is no need however, for other poultry farmers in the province to panic since measures have been taken to control the spread of the outbreak, in that the trading and movement of chickens and turkeys or their products within or between the affected villages is currently prohibited,” he said. Ms. Mohlakoana said vets would go to the affected areas on Friday to start a vaccination program. “There is no treatment for Newcastle disease currently, therefore prevention through vaccination is important,” she said. Newcastle disease is a contagious and fatal disease caused by a virus that affects domestic birds (chickens and turkeys) as well wild birds. - [...]" 

Commentary: "Monsanto’s Roundup Threatens Stability Of Global Food Supply" [03/14/12] "Monsanto’s reckless disregard for public health and the agricultural stability of the planet may be even more significant than previously thought. A shocking new report reveals how Monsanto’s Roundup is actually threatening the crop-yielding potential of the entire biosphere. The report reveals that glyphosate, which was developed by Monsanto in the early 1970s and is the active ingredient in its patented herbicide Roundup, may be irreversibly devastating the microbiodiversity of the soil – compromising the health of the entire planet, as a result. A study of more than 40,000 men suggested that a daily sugar-sweetened drink raised the chances of having a heart attack – including a deadly one – by 20 per cent. In contrast, diet varieties that use artificial sweeteners were given a clean bill of health by the study’s authors. Researcher Lawrence de Koning said the body may compensate for the sugar rush of soft drinks by making its own supply of fats, and some of these will be bad for the heart. Tests on blood samples showed those who drank the sugary beverages tended to have higher levels of dangerous blood fats and of proteins linked to heart disease. Levels of ‘good’ cholesterol were lower, the journal Circulation reported. The study also found that the more sugary drinks someone had, including still fruit squashes to which sugar is added during manufacturing, the more the risk rose. [...]"

Study: "Dehydration Alters Mood, Ability To Think" [03/12/12] "A recent study has suggested that mild dehydration can have an adverse effect on a person’s energy level, mood and ability to think and perform mental tasks. Researchers at the University of Connecticut asked a group of dehydrated subjects to do a series of tests on concentration, reasoning, memory, learning and vigilance. The results were then compared with those of another group who were not dehydrated. The findings showed that male subjects experienced fatigue and anxiety and had difficulty doing mental tasks which required vigilance, and working memory.  [...] “Even mild dehydration - 1.5 per cent loss in normal water volume in the body - that can occur in the course of our ordinary daily activities can degrade how we are feeling, especially for women, who are more susceptible to the adverse effects of low levels of dehydration,” said co-author Harris Lieberman. Commentary: "Fraudulent Study to Distract from Vaccine Association with Autism Backfires" [03/11/12] "When science is biased to comply with a certain agenda, the research can be confusing at best. Such is the case with the most recent attempt to divert attention from early childhood vaccinations as a causal factor for autism. The study was conducted at UC Davis and the findings were published in a late 2011 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences as “Brain enlargement is associated with regression in preschool-age boys with autism spectrum disorders.” Making sure this study’s vague conclusions got some public attention to help muddy the waters of vaccinations and autism, a summary of the journal’s report was published in the health sections of several mainstream outlets. The stated report theme was that this study added to the growing evidence that autism has “roots in different biological underpinnings” and “other subtypes of autism will be more closely associated with immunological differences or genetic alterations.” [...] This research group got a substantial grant for research, radiated almost 180 children’s brains, and implied that vaccines are not a causal factor for autism while not even taking vaccinations into account for each child statistically. One line in the study’s paper commented that since regression often begins at four months of age it “calls into question the association of pediatric vaccinations … in particular the … MMR.” Heidi Stevenson, in her late November 2011 “Gaia Health Blog,” debunks that statement as an effort to misdirect attention from the fact that several other vaccinations are given from two months of age or earlier. She refers to the CDC recommended child vaccine schedule to show vaccinations start as early (or earlier) than two months of age. Heidi points out that what is being observed is brain swelling from inflammation, or encephalitis, and its growth corresponds with the CDC schedule for pediatric vaccinations. Heidi’s bottom line: “If this study is valid, it documents a pattern of encephalitis that suspiciously parallels the implementation of the vaccine schedule in young children.” Many experts, including author and neurosurgeon Dr. Russell Blaylock, have indicated that vaccinations routinely cause brain inflammation. Infants have undeveloped immune systems lacking sufficient blood brain barrier protection. This study was conducted without consulting the subject children’s vaccine histories, thus avoiding the vaccination issue while proclaiming vaccines are not associated with autism. Pfizer, the maker of drugs that help alleviate arthritis and other ailments, has paid almost $3 billion in fines since 2002 and entered into three corporate integrity agreements with the Department of Health and Human Services aimed at preventing future fraud. It and other companies are fighting attempts by Congress to exclude them from government business because of their history of fraud. Merck, another pharmaceutical giant, paid $1.6 billion in fines since 2008, Medicare and Justice Department records show, to resolve claims it was not paying proper rebates to the government. Pfizer's 2009 settlement was for improperly promoting the use of drugs for purposes other than those for which they were approved by the government. Merck's 2008 settlement involved claims the company paid illegal kickbacks to health care providers in exchange for prescribing its drugs. Government investigators say their hands are tied with the tools they have. They can exclude Pfizer and other pharmaceutical companies from providing medications to Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries as punishment for bad behavior, but that would leave beneficiaries without drugs patented through a particular company. Commentary:"41 States Sell Out To Merck’s HPV Shot Gardasil Vaccine Lobbyists" [03/10/12] "Since 2006, 41 states have introduced legislation to support the HPV vaccine industry, despite the danger of death and injury. Shockingly, Dr. Diane Harper, a lead developer of Merck’s Gardasil HPV vaccine, warns against Gardasil vaccine deaths and she advocates complete disclosure about the risk of death and adverse reactions (including Guillian-Barre syndrome) to parents and patients. Dr. Harper also acknowledges that the CDC’s death rate data is skewed. 95% of infections from HPV resolve on their own with zero government intervention. Cervical cancer is rare, and only 10% of adverse reactions to vaccines are reported. Merck and GSK are the top 2 HPV vaccine makers. The HPV vaccine legislation in 41 states includes mandatory vaccination, funding Merck and GSK’s HPV vaccines, removing parental rights by removing parental consent for the HPV vaccine, or educating the public about the HPV virus. Currently, New York is considering legislation making vaccines mandatory. The federal government pays for more than 40% of HPV vaccinations. The HPV vaccine is given in 3 doses and costs over $300. Most of the girls targeted for HPV vaccination conveniently have private insurance. With this much money on the table, greedy vaccine makers are pushing the HPV vaccine that was designed to treat cervical cancer, on boys (note to Merck & GSK: males do not have cervixes). The HPV vaccine industry promotes vaccination in men and boys using the excuse that they could contract cancer from the HPV virus through anal and oral sex. However, the CDC admits that it does not know the efficacy rates of the drug for males and advises against ‘routine vaccination’. [...]"

The data indicates that dental fluorosis—damage to the teeth from fluoride, ranging from lacy white markings or spots on the enamel to staining and pitting of the tooth surface—happens when fluoride levels are too high. Water is only one of several sources of fluoride. Other common sources include dental products such as toothpaste and mouth rinses, prescription fluoride supplements, fluoride applied by dental professionals, and exposure through our food, which is often sprayed with fluoride-based pesticides. Today the fluoride in your water mostly comes from the phosphate fertilizer industry—but it’s still toxic waste, containing other byproducts such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury. And two studies show that fluoride increases the accumulation of lead in bone, teeth, and other calcium-rich tissues, transporting heavy metals into areas of your body they normally would not be able to go—like your brain. Another study revealed that prolonged, high intake of fluoride can increase the risk of brittle bones, fractures, and crippling bone abnormalities. Longtime readers may recall our 2008 article on the effects of fluoride on teeth and bones (harming kidney patients worst of all); we also noted that fluoride is a known neurotoxin, and can have detrimental effects on the thyroid, which could affect intelligence. Moreover, fluoride can combine with other chemicals in the water to make them even more harmful. For example, when chloramines combine with the fluoride in water, they work together to extract lead from old plumbing systems, which leads to the accumulation of lead in the water supply. That’s right, if a psychiatrist determines that a child under the age of 18 years is ‘sufficiently mature’, they will be sterilized without any say from the parents. Again, there is no age minimum, as long as they are ‘mature‘ enough. The legislation, known as the ‘Draft Mental Health Bill 2011′, also allows for 12-year-olds to consent to psychosurgery and electroshock. Unfortunately for Gates, who back in 2010 bought 500,000 shares of the company he is now promoting in mainstream media as the solution to the world’s problems, a team of 900 scientists have found that GMO crops are actually not effective at fighting world hunger. In fact, the massive team found that Monsanto’s seeds, which have lead to thousands of farmer suicides due to excessive costs and failure to yield crops, were outperformed by traditional “agro-ecological” farming practices. Funded by the World Bank and United Nations, an organization was created known as the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD). Commentary: "Antipsychotic Drugs Kill Far More People Than Terrorism" [03/03/12] " ... For their study, researchers from Harvard Medical School tracked more than 75,000 dementia patients living in nursing homes that were being prescribed antipsychotic drugs like haloperidol (Haldol) and quetiapine (Seroquel) for their conditions. Antipsychotic drugs are not typically administered to dementia patients, which means this is an "atypical" or "off-label" use of these drugs, despite the fact than an increasing number of doctors and nursing home personnel are prescribing them to dementia patients. In the end, it was confirmed by the team that the use of antipsychotics by dementia patients is responsible for a surge in drug-related deaths, presumably as a result of negative side effects both internally to the body, and externally in the form of altered behavior. The findings also confirmed previous ones that identified an uptick in at least 1,800 additional deaths a year as a result of dementia patients taking antipsychotic drugs. These 1,800 deaths, of course, are just the additional deaths caused by antipsychotic drugs when they are used for off-label purposes in those with dementia, which means there are tens of thousands -- and perhaps even hundreds of thousands -- of deaths every year in other patients taking antipsychotics for other purposes. This means that far more people die every single year than have ever died from so-called terrorist attacks. According to the 2003 report Death by Medicine, which was authored by Drs. Gary Null, Carolyn Dean, Martin Feldman, Debora Rasio, and Dorothy Smith, more than 783,000 people in the U.S. die every year as a result of conventional medicine, which is more than 261 times more than the number who died on 9/11 [...]"

A representative for Canada's controversial asbestos sector says he doesn't believe similar criminal charges could ever be laid against industry players here. Spokesman Guy Versailles says if it were possible, such charges likely would already have been filed against people in the highly scrutinized industry. But law expert Ed Ratushny says similar criminal charges could be possible in Canada, even if it might be difficult for prosecutors to obtain a conviction. Canada has faced mounting opposition from health critics at home and abroad over its production and export of the carcinogenic material. Industry backers, however, insist asbestos can be handled safely. Commentary: "Genetically Engineered Generic Drugs to Be Unleashed Without Mandatory Testing" [02/12/12] "Under the healthcare reform of 2010, the FDA was given the authority to regulate generic versions of genetically engineered (GE) drugs. Furthermore, some genetically engineered drugs may not even receive human or animal testing — it all depends on whether or not the FDA deems it necessary. The FDA is proposing new guidelines — an ‘abbreviated pathway’ — for generic drug makers to make similar, but not necessarily identical, generic drugs called ‘biosimilars’. The FDA will accept the drug studies from the original GE drug for approval, and will only require animal or human testing if the FDA deems it appropriate. This policy is greatly lacking, because the ingredients and amounts of the ingredients may be different. Never mind that GE product testing standards are woefully deficient to begin with, especially regarding long-term organ damage and other dangers. Or that different ingredients may have a negative synergistic effects. The excuse given for this new policy is to open competition in the free market, which is quite hard to believe, as Big Pharma monopolies control healthcare in America and cost-effective natural therapies are unfairly maligned. The government is really boosting the GE biotech drug market which was valued at $243 million in 2010 and is expected to grow to $3.7 billion in sales by 2015. The government says that GE generic biosimilars will save them $25 billion over 10 years. Ironically, GE biotech drug makers even argued against GE biosimilar generic drugs, saying that the formulas were too complex to duplicate, but meanwhile they are simultaneously pursuing copy-cats of their competitor’s GE drugs.  [...]"

Following the advice of an advisory panel who failed to examine the high number of adverse reactions and deaths associated with Gardasil use, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is now recommending that all boys between the ages of 11 and 12-years-old receive the Gardasil shot. The advisory panel and the CDC both fail to mention that Gardasil was linked to 3,589 harmful reactions and 16 deaths between May 2009 and September 2010 alone, which could be of major concern to parents considering injecting their children with the shot. Permanent disability was the result of 213 cases; 25 resulted in the diagnosis of Guillain-Barre Syndrome; and there were 789 other “serious” reports according to FDA documents. [...]"

The Le Roy Central School District scrambled to conduct environmental testing for air quality and mold when an initial 12 students developed tics and impulsive verbal outbursts last fall. But state health investigators ruled out environmental factors, latent side-effects from drugs or vaccines like Gardasil, trauma or genetic factors. Instead, doctors say conversion disorder – once called mass hysteria – is to blame among an expanding list of patients. Three more unconfirmed cases have been added to the original list of students exhibiting the symptoms, and others are being examined. Air quality and mold surveys at the school have all come back negative, according to district officials and representatives of Leader Professional Services Inc., a company hired to conduct environmental testing at the school after the symptoms first surfaced. The Independent newspaper reports that there is a notice in the cafeteria of the Monsanto pharmaceutical factory is High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, advising customers “as far as practicable, GM soya and maize (has been removed) from all food products served in our restaurant. We have taken the steps to ensure that you, the customer, can feel confident in the food we serve.” The notice was posted by the Sutcliffe Catering Group. The findings are being published in an upcoming issue of the journal Physical Review Letters. "The result is exciting for scientific reasons," said lead author Jiangyu Li, a UW associate professor of mechanical engineering. "But it could also have biomedical implications." A ferroelectric material is an electrically polar molecule with one side positively charged and the other negatively charged, whose polarity can be reversed by applying an electrical field. Ferroelectricity is common in synthetic materials and used for displays, memory storage, and sensors. (Related research by Li and colleagues seeks to exploit ferroelectric materials for tiny low-power, high-capacity computer memory chips.) In the new study, Li collaborated with co-author Katherine Zhang at Boston University to explore the phenomenon in biological tissues. The only previous evidence of ferroelectricity in living tissue was reported last year in seashells. Others had looked in mammal tissue, mainly in bones, but found no signs of the property. This is due to the unique ability of a main component in turmeric that is actually able to block an enzyme that promotes the spread of head and neck cancer. Researchers at UCLA found that curcumin — the primary component in turmeric also responsible for its color — exhibited these cancer-blocking properties during a study involving 21 participants suffering from head and neck cancers. The subjects were given two chewable curcumin tablets containing 1,000 miligrams of the substance each. After administering the chewable curcumin tablets, an independent lab in Maryland was in charge of evaluating the results. What the lab found was that the enzymes in the patients’ mouths responsible for promoting cancer spread and growth were inhibited by the curcumin supplementation. As a result, the curcumin intake halted the spread of the malignant cells. Curcumin has previously been found to reduce tumors by 81% in similarly shocking research, which also gives credence to the natural anti-cancer benefits of turmeric and curcumin intake. [...]"

After careful evaluation of trial data, the Cochrane group say that Tamiflu appears to affect antibody production -- a claim that Roche refutes. This is important, say Cochrane, because influenza vaccination relies on an antibody response to be effective. But when asked by the BMJ, Roche refused to explain how the drug works. As such, the Cochrane group say that "until more is known about the mode of action of neuraminidase inhibitors, health professionals, patients and other decision makers need to reflect on the findings of this review before making any decision about the use of the drug." The drugs, known as hypothalamic blockers, delay the onset of puberty by suppressing sex hormones. Experts believe this will give children the “space” to decide if they want to live as male or female, before the appearance of physical signs such as facial hair or breasts. Trials of the injections are being carried out at a clinic in North London run by the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation.  [...] Although GID diagnosis used to be rare, a 2011 report by the Gender Identity Research and Education Society (Gires), funded by the Home Office, found that the figure had trebled between 1998 and 2010, to 12,500. The other, a graphic artist in her fifties, says she's doing chores more easily and even riding a bike. Of course the authors make no mention of the relationship between vaccination and over 189 diseases as observed by peer-reviewed research. Commentary: "Polio Vaccines Now The #1 Cause of Polio Paralysis" [01/19/12] "The Polio Global Eradication Initiative (PGEI), founded in 1988 by the World Health Organization, Rotary International, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, holds up India as a prime example of its success at eradicating polio, stating on its website (Jan. 11 2012) that "India has made unprecedented progress against polio in the last two years and on 13 January, 2012, India will reach a major milestone -- a 12-month period without any case of polio being recorded." This report, however, is highly misleading, as an estimated 100-180 Indian children are diagnosed with vaccine-associated polio paralysis (VAPP) each year. In fact, the clinical presentation of the disease, including paralysis, caused by VAPP is indistinguishable from that caused by wild polioviruses, making the PGEI's pronouncements all the more suspect. According to the Polio Global Eradication Initiative's own statistics2 there were 42 cases of wild-type polio (WPV) reported in India in 2010, indicating that vaccine-induced cases of polio paralysis (100-180 annually) outnumber wild-type cases by a factor of 3-4. Even if we put aside the important question of whether or not the PGEI is accurately differentiating between wild and vaccine-associated polio cases in their statistics, we still must ask ourselves: should not the real-world effects of immunization, both good and bad, be included in PGEI's measurement of success? For the dozens of Indian children who develop vaccine-induced paralysis every year, the PGEI's recent declaration of India as nearing "polio free" status, is not only disingenuous, but could be considered an attempt to minimize their obvious liability in having transformed polio from a natural disease vector into a man-made (iatrogenic) one. VAPP is, in fact, the predominant form of the disease in developed countries like the US since 1973.3 The problem of vaccine-induced polio paralysis was so severe that the The United States moved to the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) in 2000, after the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended altogether eliminating the live-virus oral polio vaccine (OPV), which is still used throughout the third world, despite the known risks. Researchers from Harvard Medical School in Boston investigated the drugs in question, Glivec and Sutent, and discovered that although it’s proven that they reduce the size of the cancer tumour – it could also make them more aggressive and mobile as a result. Experts looked at a little-studied group of cells called pericytes, which provide structural support to the blood vessels and act as a ‘gatekeeper’ that stops tumours growing. However, these pericyte cells are wiped out by advanced cancer drug treatments that are designed to prevent the growth, meaning the tumour has more freedom to ‘metastasise’, or spread, around the body. Glivec, the brand name of the drug imatinib, and Sutent, also known as sunitinib, have both shown to significantly increase patient survival rates. However, researchers argue that ultimately, these drugs could be making the cancers more deadly, as metastasis to vital organs, such as the liver or brain, are two chief causes of cancer deaths. The study, published in the Cancer Cell journal, came to this conclusion after removing pericytes from breast cancer tumours in genetically engineered mice. Throughout the following 25 days, researchers saw a 30% decrease in tumour growth but a three-fold increase in the number of secondary tumours growing in the animals’ lungs.  [...]"  

MSM: "Israelis Find Vitamin D Helps Against Liver Diseases" [01/18/12] "Two Israeli research teams have separately become the first to discover two different benefits from vitamin D against common liver diseases – hepatitis C and cirrhosis. One involved the mechanism in human cells in the lab, while and the other proved itself on liver tissue in rats. The two discoveries have not yet been tested clinically. Prof. Ran Tur-Kaspa, from the Rabin Medical Center- Beilinson Campus, and his team worked on hepatitis C, the major factor in chronic liver disease that can lead to cirrhosis. It is also the main cause in the Western world of organ failure requiring a liver transplant and is one of the causes of primary liver cancer. [...] Antiviral treatment can help in half the cases, but the side effects are serious even if the treatment is effective. Tur-Kaspa, a liver specialist and researcher who is dean of the Galilee Medical Faculty in Safed, said there is a constant search for medications and other technologies that are more effective and accompanied by fewer side effects. He and his team investigated ordinary vitamin D, which is already taken by many people as prevention for numerous diseases, to see whether it had any effect on hepatitis C and on liver cells that host it. They discovered, and published in Hepatology, a peer-reviewed medical journal, that vitamin D directly halts the activity of viruses in general and hepatitis C in particular. They also found that a system for actively producing vitamin D is found in liver cells and can activate the immune system and repress the virus. The research showed without doubt that vitamin D functions in the liver cell, and it causes an increase in naturally produced interferon and repression of the production of the virus, said Dr. Romy Zemel, who was part of the team. The research proves that integrating the use of interferon and vitamin D boosts the effects synergistically, beyond the effects of each alone. Interferons are a family of naturally occurring proteins that are made and secreted by immune-system cells. Thus, with the right combination, said the Beilinson researchers, one could destroy the virus. Their discovery was made serendipitously. Vitamin D is produced as a result of exposure to the sun or taken in the diet or by supplements. Its classic role, said Tur-Kaspa, is to protect the balance of calcium and phosphorus in the body. Over the years, additional influences such as on the immune system became clear, and at the same time, vitamin D became popular as a number of health benefits were reported. The Beilinson discovery of the weakening of the hepatitis C virus in the presence of the vitamin opens up a potential treatment for the infections, so one can improve the efficacy of treatment while reducing the dosage of interferon, said Tur- Kaspa."

Over a decade, that has added up to make thyroid cancer the fastest-increasing cancer, says Tod Huntley, an otolaryngologist and head and neck surgeon with the Center for Ear, Nose, Throat and Allergy in Indianapolis. Obesity, radiation exposure and diets low in fruits and vegetables are three potential culprits, Huntley says. People who are overweight have a 20% increase in thyroid cancer; those who are obese have a 53% increase. The more dental X-rays a person has, the higher the risk, studies show. Often, thyroid cancer has no symptoms but is diagnosed when a person or his physician notices a lump in the neck. Leading researchers from Harvard Medical School and elsewhere told ABC News that, despite UN denials, there is now a mountain of evidence suggesting the strain originated in Nepal, and was carried to Haiti by Nepalese soldiers who came to Haiti to serve as UN peacekeepers after the earthquake that ravaged the country on Jan. 12, 2010 -- two years ago today. Haiti had never seen a case of cholera until the arrival of the peacekeepers, who allegedly failed to maintain sanitary conditions at their base. "What scares me is that the strain from South Asia has been recognized as more virulent, more capable of causing severe disease, and more transmissible," said John Mekalanos, who chairs the Department of Microbiology and Immunobiology at Harvard Medical School. "These strains are nasty. So far there has been no secondary outbreak. But Haiti now represents a foothold for a particularly dangerous variety of this deadly disease." More than 500,000 Haitians have been infected, and Mekalanos said a handful of victims who contracted cholera in Haiti have now turned up in Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and in Boston, Miami and New York, but only in isolated cases. MSM: "New Paraben ‘Link' To Breast Cancer Risks" [01/13/12] "New scientific evidence has indicated that common preservative chemicals found in underarm antiperspirants and thousands of other everyday products, can be detected in breast cancer tumours. These chemical agents, also known as parabens, are found in many toiletries like face wash, shampoos and make-up, as well as, processed meats and pastries and even in the contraceptive Pill. However, this study focused on the possibility that antiperspirants may ‘soak’ through the armpit skin. Scientists from the University of Reading believe there is an important link between these chemicals and breast cancer after studying the samples of 20 different human breast tumours taken from mastectomies between 2005 and 2008. Researchers measured the concentration of parabens in the tissue of the breast, from armpit to breast bone. They detected parabens in these samples with a concentration of 20.6 ng per gram of tissue. The chemicals discovered were in their ester form, rather than metabolite form, which suggests that the route of entry was topical, not oral. Even though few of these women had used deodorants, 99% of the samples contained one or more paraben, while 60% of the tissue samples contained traces of all five of the most commonly used parabens. Although the link between parabens and breast cancer have been highlighted before in previous studies, with it first coming to light in 1998, the latest discovery is more significant, claims lead author of the study, Dr Philippa Darbre. "Parabens are used as preservatives in thousands of cosmetic, food and pharmaceutical products but this is the first study to show their accumulation in human tissues," Dr Darbre explains. "It demonstrates that if people are exposed to these chemicals, then the chemicals will accumulate in their bodies. Their detection in human breast tumours is of concern since parabens have been shown to be able to mimic the action of the female hormone oestrogen and oestrogen can drive the growth of human breast tumours.  [...]"

Study: "Antidepressants Cause Arteries to Thicken 400% More Than Aging" [01/09/12] "Depression may be the worst emotional experience there is. The causes are many, and it often drives people to zig-zag past everything that matters and into a pill bottle of pharmaceutical ‘treatments’. But these solutions offered by the pharmaceutical industry are nothing but a sham, and their antidepressant products only make you more depressed and trigger suicidal thoughts. One study has also found that antidepressants cause your arteries to thicken 400% more than aging – a main factor in the thickening of the arteries. A study conducted by the Emory University School of Medicine included over 500 middle-aged male twins, both who served in the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. The researchers noted that among 59 pairs of twins where only one brother was on antidepressants, the one ingesting the drugs usually had higher carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) – the thickness of main arteries in the neck. 'One of the strongest and best-studied factors that thickens someone’s arteries is age, and that happens at around 10 microns per year…In our study, users of antidepressants see an average 40 micron increase in IMT, so their carotid arteries are in effect four years older,' says the first study author Amit Shah, MD. The most commonly prescribed antidepressants are known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as Prozac. [...]" 

MSM: "Doctor Linking MMR Vaccine And Autism Sues Critics" [01/07/12] "Andrew Wakefield, the doctor whose 1998 study proposed a long-discredited link between autism and the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is to sue for damages following accusations made a year ago that his research was fraudulent. Wakefield's MMR-autism claims were seriously undermined in 2010 when The Lancet retracted his original study. In the same year, he was banned from practising as a doctor by the UK General Medical Council (GMC) for "fundamental failings in his duty as a doctor" that emerged from a three-year investigation into the MMR vaccine affair, the longest in the GMC's history. In its verdict, the GMC's investigating panel identified "transgressions in many aspects of Dr Wakefield's research [and] findings of dishonesty in regard to his writing of a scientific paper that had major implications for public health". It also accused him of dishonestly failing to declare to The Lancet that he had a patent on a competing vaccine, called Transfer Factor. A year ago, the British Medical Journal weighed in with another damning claim: that the original research was fraudulent and that Wakefield manipulated the data and diagnoses of the 12 children in his study to fix the case against the MMR vaccine. Now, it appears Wakefield is fighting back. In a suit launched on 5 January in Texas, he is suing the British investigative journalist Brian Deer for articles he wrote in the BMJ in January last year, and the journal's editor Fiona Godlee for editorials she wrote supporting Deer's investigations. Wakefield is also suing the journal itself and its publishers. The suit reveals that Wakefield's action is not an attempt to resurrect his original claim that the MMR vaccine causes autism. Rather, his main objective is to defend his personal integrity and professional reputation by challenging allegedly false and malicious claims by Deer that he deliberately manipulated and falsified data and diagnoses. Deer claimed in his analysis, for example, that three of nine children reported with regressive autism didn't actually have autism. The suit says this is false and that "based on the clear underlying evidence, these subjects did suffer from autism".  Wakefield's suit also challenges Deer's assertions that in some of the children, symptoms of autism began before they had their MMR jabs. Deer says that in child 11, for example, symptoms appeared two months earlier than reported in The Lancet and before the jab, but Wakefield insists that according to the father of the child, symptoms did not arise until after the vaccination.  [...]"

The disease, which may be an unusual form of epilepsy, could be linked to the parasitic worm responsible for river blindness, a condition that affects some 18 million people, most of them in Africa. The current outbreaks are concentrated in the districts of Kitgum, Pader and Gulu. In Pader alone, 66 children and teenagers have died. More than 1000 cases were diagnosed between August and mid-December. Onchocerca volvulus, a nematode worm that causes river blindness, is known to infest all three affected districts. Nearly all the children with nodding syndrome are thought to live near permanent rivers, another hint of a connection with river blindness. There is no known cure for nodding syndrome, so Uganda's Ministry of Health has begun using anticonvulsants such as sodium valproate to treat its signs and symptoms. Meanwhile the disease is continuing to spread, say Janet Oola, Pader's health officer, and Sam William Oyet, the district's medical entomology officer. It has now reached the Ugandan district of Yumbe, which borders the Republic of South Sudan – and cases have also been reported in the southern region of the world's newest country. [...]"

In cases that showed similarities, stress factors seemed to play a role in the patient's symptoms. The Le Roy School District issued a statement to parents and residents over the holiday week explaining the situation and reaffirming that the health, safety and well being of students and school staff is their top priority. UK: "Drug Studies Being Suppressed By Researchers, Could Hurt Patients" [01/05/12] "A British medical journal says a worrying number of drug studies are being suppressed by researchers and that the lack of public data could threaten patient safety. One study described by the BMJ journal found the results of fewer than half of drug trials paid for by the U.S. National Institutes for Health were published in a scientific journal within 30 months of being finished. The U.S. agency spends about $3.5 billion sponsoring more than 100,000 clinical trials worldwide. Previous studies have found one quarter to one half of clinical trials are unpublished for various reasons, including companies sitting on information that could hurt sales, journals uninterested in publishing negative results and academics fearful of releasing results that contradict their original hypothesis.  [...]"

Not only was this class of silicone not approved for medical use, but some of it also contained fuel additives. Basically, PIP pumped some plastic bags full of silicone intended for use with fuels and food products - and then sold them as implants. Not surprisingly, the implants had a high breakage rate and many women had to get them removed even before news of the company's misdeeds was made public in 2010.  [...]" 

Commentary:  "Edible Mushrooms: Nature's Most Researched Anti-Cancer Agent" [01/02/12] "Over the course of the past few years we have uncovered a remarkable body of research on the medicinal properties of mushrooms. In fact, when it comes to natural cancer research, no other category has been the subject of more human clinical research than AHCC and Lentinan, both unique preparations of shiitake mushroom. AHCC stands for active hexose correlated compound, and is classified as a functional food made from hybridized mycelia of shiitake (and sometimes other mushrooms) in rice bran. It contains both alpha- and beta-glucan polysaccharides, well-known modulators of host immunity. Lentinan, also from shiitake (Lentinula edodes), is exclusively beta-glucan. What is so unique about these compounds is that they are "host-mediated" anti-cancer agents, helping the cancer-afflicted body combat cancer by boosting immune function. This is a radically different approach versus conventional chemotherapy, which poisons rapidly dividing cells, indiscriminately, killing both cancer and immune cells (among other healthy cell types). How can edible mushrooms like shiitake protect us against cancer, perhaps the most widely feared disease that presently afflicts our species? Could the reason be that we co-evolved with fungi, and that the essential polysaccharides they contain were present in our diet for so long that the genetic/ epigenetic infrastructure of our bodies now depends on them? Beta-glucan, after all, is found widely distributed in whole grains, nutritional yeast, as well as fungi. The friendly bacteria, in and outside of our gut, produce the beta-glucan fraction through the biotransformative processes of digestive fermentation and, in the case of food, culturing. Could it be that, failing to consume (or produce) adequate quantities, our body fails in its cancer immunosurveillance -- not unlike the well-established role that vitamin D deficiency has in maintaining proper immune function, and therefore reducing cancer risk. But perhaps there is an even deeper reason to why fungi keep us alive and well, even when faced with the most terrible of health challenges: we share a common, unique evolutionary origin, and our fates may still be intimately interwoven.
