"A rocket at the centre of Nasa's plans to return to the moon is so "dangerously flawed" it could kill its crew, agency engineers have claimed.
Concerns over the safety of the Ares craft prompted one engineer to resign, complaining of “catastrophic-level risks”. The space agency has admitted that in certain conditions Ares could blast off into its own launch tower, and that other potential problems include the rocket vibrating so much that its astronauts could die before they reach orbit. But Nasa said the problems were "growing pains" and could be fixed before the US 'goes back to the moon' in '2020'.

The 18-year-old Hubble as been unable to send back pictures of the cosmos since Sept. 27 because of a failure of its science commanding and data-handling system. Flight controllers tried unsuccessfully to get a backup channel working last week, and may make another attempt later this week .... When they do fly, the Hubble repair crew members will take up a replacement part for the disabled system.

"Roger Shawyer has developed an engine with no moving parts that he believes can replace rockets and make trains, planes and automobiles obsolete. He has built a working prototype to test his ideas, and as a respected spacecraft engineer he has persuaded the British government to fund his work. Now organisations from other parts of the world, including the US air force and the Chinese government, are beating a path to his tiny company .... The device that has sparked their interest is an engine that generates thrust purely from electromagnetic radiation - microwaves to be precise - by exploiting the strange properties of relativity. It has no moving parts, and releases no exhaust or noxious emissions. Potentially, it could pack the punch of a rocket in a box the size of a suitcase. It could one day replace the engines on almost any spacecraft. More advanced versions might allow cars to lift from the ground and hover. It could even lead to aircraft that will not need wings at all. I can't help thinking that it sounds too good to be true .... Surprisingly, Shawyer's disruptive technology rests on an idea that goes back more than a century. In 1871 the physicist James Clerk Maxwell worked out that light should exert a force on any surface it hits, like the wind on a sail .... But what if you could amplify the effect? Shawyer's expertise is in microwaves, and when he was asked to come up with a gyroscopic device for a guidance system he instead came up with the idea for an electromagnetic engine. According to the principles outlined by Maxwell, this will produce a tiny force on the end walls. Now carefully match the size of the cavity to the wavelength of the microwaves and you create a chamber in which the microwaves resonate, allowing it to store large amounts of energy ... "

Key to the experiment is an investigation into whether those who say they briefly departed their body while clinically dead "physically" left themselves (notice how they said 'themselves', because they're in a body-ID perspective) behind or were simply imagining it during their resuscitation ... The Awareness during Resuscitation experiment (Aware) is an expansion of a pilot scheme run by the Human Consciousness Project at the University of Southampton, which specialises in studying the human brain, consciousness and death ... About 25 centres in the US and Britain, including Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, University Hospital in Birmingham and the Morriston Hospital in Swansea, will take part in the experiment. Over the next three years about 15,000 patients will be brought to these hospitals suffering from cardiac arrest. Around 1,500 are likely to be resuscitated and hundreds will probably claim they had some sort of out-of-body experience when they were clinically dead ... To test whether such experiences involve the mind leaving the body, pictures will be placed around the areas of the hospital where heart attacks occur most frequently, such as accident and emergency and intensive care units. "Plotted on a map of Britain, the sightings can be seen to stretch from Liverpool to Dover and from Llanelli to Derby. Whatever the explanation, experts agree that the number of suspected flying saucers has hit unusual highs this summer.
Malcolm Robinson, who studies the phenomenon, said: "Something very bizarre is happening in the skies over the UK." The founder member of Strange Phenomena Investigations, added: "There has been an unusual number of sightings recently.
"Some experts believe it could be linked to global warming and craft from outer space are appearing because they are concerned about what man is doing to this planet." Among mysterious flying objects spotted in recent months was a 'glowing' disc spotted above the M5 motorway.
